    3. Goodmorning listers, I.m still trying to find MITCHELL family in Tranmere,Birkenhead & nearby places, even back in Liverpool who were connected to Thomas Pendlebury Mitchell,James John Pearce or John snr& Hannah. Thomas died in Aged Mariners Home in Liscard in 1910.,I've not been able to find any of the other above mentioned in census lists. One in 1881 may be correct Thomas on the "Comet"he is listed as married .Who was his wife Mary nee Edwards??? or some-one else.Is any-one any-where kin to this man other than me? A man "W.J.Mitchell" giving his address as Fairfield Hotel, RockFerry, mentioned him in 1899 Mersey paper(?) perhaps this W.J. lived at Hotel, maybe passing through. Hellllp please. So happy I'd be if you can. Regards Wendy M. Sth.Aust. --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Photos: Now with unlimited storage

    3. Hi Betty, Your people may have married in church! Few, if any, R.C. Priests were "authorised persons" who could marry couples according to the Law. When I married in an R.C. Church by the Priest, we immediately went into the Vestry and were married again by the civilian registrar. 3. Hello Merseyside Listers, I'm hoping that someone may be able to help me break down a very stubborn brick wall. Any lead on HENRY JAMES BLAKENEY, ( m to Rose CARNEY) or his descendants, last heard of in 1917 at 28, Whalley Street, Dingle, would be wonderful news. As far as I know he worked on the pilot boats before and after WW1. Thanks Betty.

    2. Hi Hella Welcome to the list I have a collection of old Liverpool Newspapers and have been putting a list of ships and captains on my pages at _www.old-liverpool.co.uk_ (http://www.old-liverpool.co.uk) but unfortunately mine are mainly all from 1811-34 so too early for you. Jane Campbell has later Liverpool newspapers and her site is: _http://www.old-merseytimes.co.uk/_ (http://www.old-merseytimes.co.uk/) Liverpool Record Office also has a large collection of old Liverpool Newspapers on microfilm perhaps an e-mail to them might yield some information. E-mail _recoffice.central.library@liverpool.gov.uk_ (mailto:recoffice.central.library@liverpool.gov.uk) They will answer queries on a first come first served basis and will often do a look up if it only takes approx fifteen minutes, after that they prefer you to use their research services and they charge for this by the hour. The British Library in Colindale London also has a large collection of old Liverpool Newspapers but they also charge for their services but once someone has paid they will e-mail the relevant article _http://www.bl.uk/collections/newspapers.html_ (http://www.bl.uk/collections/newspapers.html) Your English is very good by the way! 3. Thanks to everyone from the various lists who has responded to my 'Nurse Child' query. I don't think I have ever had so many responses to a single question. Alan Siddorn ---------- Not exactly a location specific census topic but I think the question could apply to any part of the country so I will go ahead and ask. I am looking at a page from the 1871 census and am slightly puzzled. On the census form (RG10/3714 page 37) in Bunbury, Cheshire are Samuel SIDDORNS age 75, his wife Ellen SIDDORNS age 65 and William SIDDORNS age 3 who in the column for Relation to Head of Family appears to have G Child and Nurse Child both entered against his name. I have never seen Nurse Child on a census form before and wondered if anyone had any ideas or information about the meaning of it. Also at the same address is a William CLARK who rather unfortunately for him is described as 'Ruptured'.

    2. Dorothy Holden
    3. Hello Alan, This question crops up quite often - usually a Nurse child is one that a family has taken in ( and this could mean by family such as grandparents). Some parishes paid for infants and children to be cared for outside the Workhouse as this was generally cheaper. Some arrangements were private, more or less like fostering arrangements today. Babies who were orphaned or born to single mothers who had to work are often listed with other families, again being shown as Nurse child, in this case probably because the mother in the family they are living with had a similar aged child - no formula milk then! Very rarely Nurse child is a term used to describe older girls who would care for babies whilst the mothers worked. 3. Having transcribed lots of census records from this period, I would say that the occupation would be "child nurse' - maybe the enumerator wrote 'nurse' and 'child' as an afterthought.
