    1. Ship board Marriage
    2. wendy miles
    3. Hi again folks, just when I thought I'd run out of questions, guess what? Can anyone tell me if in the late 1850s-1860 two people of marine occupations e.g.ship stewards could marry on board their merchant vessel? presuming they were off-shore? would the marriage then be registered back in britain as their home port? Cannot find the one I'm looking for, am looking all over for answers. Grateful for any assist, cheers Wendy M. --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Find a local business fast with Yahoo! 2. Hi John It's my understanding (I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong) that the Merseyside Maritime Museum in Liverpool has holdings for the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board and according to an information sheet on their site: _http://www.liverpoolmuseums.org.uk/maritime/_ (http://www.liverpoolmuseums.org.uk/maritime/) 'In all, there are some 540 large volumes held as part of the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board archive at the Maritime Archives & Library, Merseyside Maritime Museum. Since these volumes are stored in a reserve store, they are available strictly by appointment only' I would be interested to see these records myself as my grandfather Thomas GARVEY lived in Bootle and was a dock foreman on Gladstone Docks in the cold storage depot Let us know how you get on, or if you hear anything more from anyone else Caryl _www.old-liverpool.co.uk_ (http://www.old-liverpool.co.uk)

    3. Can anyone tell me please, where is New Kirby? I have seen on map West Kirby but not New Kirby. 1881 census lists someone as born there in1819. Also of a family living in Tranmere in 1881, if a member died in 1882, would they likely be buried in "Rakes lane cemetery" or elsewhere? Thankyou kindly if you can help. 3. During the period from 1901 to 1920 my grandfather who lived in the Bootle area worked in the docks. Does anyone know how I can find out any more information on this period of employment? I wonder if he might have been in a union and if so - which. Any help anyone can offer would be greatly appreciated. John

    1. MINIKIN in Birkenhead
    2. Patricia Smith
    3. Looking for some local knowledge in the search for the birth of Marion MINIKIN, born sometime between April 1854 and March 1855. Her father was a master tailor, George Minikin, and her mother was Bridget Minikin (both originally from Cumberland). In two census records she is listed as born in Birkenhead, Cheshire. However, in three other census records she is born in Liverpool, Lancs. Have searched for her birth registration for years in vain - doesn't help that "Minikin" is one of those names that is often misspelt! Have scoured a local copy of St Catherines House index for the relevant period, but unfortunately it is a handwritten section of the index, photographed in negative, and many of the entries are totally illegible on the microfiche. In 1861 she was living with her parents at 5 Old Chester Road, Tranmere, near Birkenhead, which leads me to favour Birkenhead as her place of birth. Can anyone tell me the name(s) of C of E parish churches located in or near to ! Tranmere and Birkenhead in 1854-5? There is nothing at the moment on the IGI, but I think church records are going to be my last resort. Thanks! Patricia Smith, Wollongong, NSW, Australia

    3. Hello, Wendy. Kelly's Directory of Liverpool and Birkenhead, 1894, lists John MYERS as the licensee of the Fairfield Hotel, Rock Ferry. However, it also lists a William MITCHELL, licensee of the Medlock Hotel, Medlock Street, Kirkdale, Lpool. Gore's Directory of Liverpool and Birkenhead (part 3), 1900., lists William MITCHELL at the Fairfield Hotel, 292 Old Chester Road, Rock Ferry. Kelly's Directory of Cheshire 1902, has William MITCHELL as in 1900, at the Fairfield Hotel. William MITCHELL was not at the Fairfield Hotel in 1914; Kelly's list a James Ross HURRELL. Hope this helps. Regards, John.
