Is there anyone out there who might be able to look up christening of Catherine Farrell c 1829 in Liverpool registers. I believe the family were Roman Catholic. I have her marriage at St Peter's Chapel, Seel Street, Liverpool in 1862, and I suppose there is a slight chance she may have been baptised in this church. Any help most welcome. Anne

I found this on a Google search, which I expect you've already done, Ian. Noting that date of expansion in the 1750s, I wonder if a village might have been submerged to provide water? This we know has happened both in the Treweryn Valley in Wales, and also in the Lake District. Marged "Merseyside's largest body of inland water offers picturesque lakeside trails & walks as well as national competitive powerboating & angling events. Once simply a mill pond built to power Carr's Mill, this was hugely expanded in the 1750s to provide water to the new St.Helens Canal, about a mile away. The lake is a firm favourite, busy with anglers & water sports enthusiasts. It's also a great place for birdwatchers - look out for herons, great crested grebes, coots & various species of duck and gull." Can anyone help solve a riddle? Talking with friends tonight, they said they had been informed that under Carr Mill Dam, St Helens, there was an abandoned village. Can anyone clarify this? Best wishes,

I'm looking for relatives on my Father's side of the family. My Fathers name was Reginald Ian Bainbridge he was born in Liverpool in 1929 & had a Sister Beryl Bainbridge (The Author) born in 1934 he was the son of Richard Bainbridge born approx 1908 & his wife Winnie (presume Winifred) Baines of Liverpool (DOB unknown). They moved from the Bootle area of Liverpool to Formby in the 1930's. I know from my Father before his death that he had cousins & 2nd cousins in the Liverpool/Lancashire area with the surnames Bainbridge/Baines but we have been unable to trace any of them. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, David
Dear all - have just spotted something that might help with a family mystery. Some time between 1851 and 1861 my ggggrandfather, John RYAN, born Ireland, died. Family legend (with some variations, depending on which branch of the family) has it that he worked for Bruner-Mond - on this they are all agreed. However, this was impossible, as Bruner Mond was not formed for some years after this. He was, however, a 'chemical labourer' living mostly in Liverpool (children baptised in St Anthony's Scotland Rd from late 1820s) with a brief sojourn to Bristol (1841 census). The legend goes on that the chemical company (Muspratt or whoever) gave his Catherine a shop as a form of compensation, and the address of this was 288 Vauxhall Rd. Catherine or her descendants continued to live at that address for at least 50 years. I had always thought the address was empty in 1851, but recently looking at the Gores 1853 directory found it was inhabited by Sidney DEBNEY, provisions dealer. Checked on the 1851 census, and his address is listed as 250 Vauxhall Rd, but the neighbours - William GASS / GOSS and John WILLIAMS - are the same as those listed in the Directory. I am assuming, therefore, that the houses were renumbered between 1851 and 1853. This is a very specific timescale. Does anyone know about this? Was it common? There must have been a great deal of building in the areas at the time. Any ideas, anyone? Rachel
