Thank you for your advice. That's the problem you need loads of emigrants out of UK to search Ancestry.com. I don't have loads who emigrated either. I found first cousins marrying in Manhattan and from there was able to find them in the Census. From there they went to Wisconsin, where there was a Tannery Industry. I wonder if there is not someone who has created a website for trades and industries for the immigrants into US. Those of us who are living in England and Wales find a similar issue of expense with Scotland's People. It needs for a list of names to be searched before purchasing credits. Those of the uninitiated are blind to how quickly credits are spent. It recognised my details (I registered ages ago and have since paid up to ancestry.co.uk) but it is giving me free access to ancestry.com. Just wish I had found loads of ancestors who'd emigrated, I've only got one definite and a very kind list member had already found that one for me. It may well be that they are doing one of those "for new customers only" deals (I always think of that bank advert when I hear that!) as users who are already registered are routed elsewhere. If anyone fancies giving it a go, using an alternative name and a disposable hotmail account may fool the systems. I'll give it a go from home tonight. I'm on the UK system but have never used the US system just for the sake of one or two names.
Thanks Andrew. I did look there first, but he wasn't traceable, even though I knew the month of death. Dear Jess, Many thanks for your kindness. I did know where and on what date he was buried. I appreciate your giving me the reference. He is somewhat of a mystery man so it will be interesting. The name changed from SHERRET in Scotland to SHERRATT in Herefordshire. The ancestory BMD records are mostly (the pre-1900 dexed ones at least) copies of the FreeBMD database which doesn't need membership. <g> Yes, of course, and I realised that I could get a throw away mail address. Nevertheless the records on Ancestry.com are not as well suited to those of us living in the UK as Ancestry.co.uk, which someone new to genealogy might not know. I think its worth sharing experiences, which is my prime purpose always for those who don't know. At least my cynicism didn't stop me from pursuing it to find out as much as I did with that purpose in mind. ;-) Janet ----- Original Message ----- From: "Andrew Price" > I've not tried the offer but it often helps to answer cynicism with > cynicism . > > > I suggest opening a free hotmail account just for this purpose. Hi, Yes distance is the barrier but maybe if we are trravelling interstate might be an idea to see if a "catchup" with another Merseysider is possible. Sure that a note in this column would draw a response. Enjoyed the memories of Schooldays in Wartime - these coupled with recalls of 5/- meals in Cafes, Spam,Sweet coupons, queuing for Oranges, Banana etc. Was not me that said I would write a book - perhaps I should !!.
