Hi, The Mariners Homes, were indeed homes for retired sea captains [and also I think for ordinary seamen] and their wives...The big red brick building, on the top of the hill, was (I believe} a nursing home. The houses on the next hill were the houses for more agile people. The Mariners hill was a great courting place, counting the stars ,and watching the ships?????????? Happy days......... My late husband Ron and I became engaged on the Hill Easter 1956 I do know that some of the old roof tiles, that were taken off the houses when some were demolished are now on my friends roof!!!!!! I took my Australian partner there last year, and there wasn't even a seat on the hill...I hope they have finished the work that was taking place then, and that the whole area will have been updated and restored to its former glory. Didn't get along the prom this year but the Egremont area is really looking good. I can recommend the food and views from the Egremont pub...again fond memories of it in the late 50,s when the boys used to play their guitars, and because the pub didn,t have a licence somebody wo, as uld push a bell, and the guitars went under the seat, as the police checked the premises....they'd give us a wink asd they passed, because of course they had heard the music from outside Ann Higginson [nee Jones Park Road Wallasey now Melbourne Australia -----Original Message----- From: eng-merseyside-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:eng-merseyside-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Marged Sent: Thursday, 9 November 2006 9:56 AM To: Ron Fitzpatrick; eng-merseyside@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [ENG-MERSEYSIDE] "The Mariners Homes - New Brighton" Does the picture show houses high above a grassy bank Ron? I thought you might be interested in what is contained in the death certificate. It's beautifully written, and quite clear. The identity of the Informant however, is identical to the deceased; both Alexander Sherratt, both of the same age, both of the same address. I would think the odds of that happening are quite short. Personally I've switched various times between different packages & currently use Legacy. I've used Family Tree Maker, Brothers Keeper and The Master Genealogist in the past. I've ended up with my current package largely due to strong source tracking. I'd advise trying a few of them. I know that legacy offer a free download with extra add-ons if you buy it (although frankly the free version is absolutely fine). I'm sure that many other packages will offer the same so I'd advise downloading a few and trying them out. So long as they offer to import and export files in Gedcom format (the universal file format for family tree info) then you'll be able to switch your data from one system to another without having to re-key. A little late on the conversation re Ancestry, but thought I'd drop in with my bit. It is a great site, but if you are looking up civil registration in England, try freebmd. This site has volunteer transcribers who are transcribing the information from the big index volumes online. There is the ability to do fairly narrow or expanded searchers. If this is all old news, please ignore. If someone wants more, post to the list. There is certainly a database for the Sugar Workers http://home.clara.net/mawer/blog.html not sure if this is just for UK - I have put my German great-grandfather on it - John Henry Cors Marged I wonder if there is not someone who has created a website for trades and industries for the immigrants into US.
