I wish you all a very happy and peaceful Christmas, followed by a prosperous and peaceful New Year. In the lead up to Christmas, perhaps we could have some Christmas recollections - if they concern Merseyside, all the better. If they don't, well - we can overlook it for once and look forward to some good contributions. Perhaps people would just like to tell us what their plans are for Christmas - staying home or visiting family? All the best, everyone Marged
I still listen for the ships sirens at midnight on New Years Eve...... I'm 3000 miles away from them now... (Not only that, midnight in Ontario is 5am New Years Day in Liverpool) I can still hear them though.... you just have to listen harder ;-) Tom Oakville, Ontario, Canada -----Original Message----- From: eng-merseyside-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:eng-merseyside-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Pam Craven Sent: Thursday, December 14, 2006 7:22 PM To: eng-merseyside@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [ENG-MERSEYSIDE] Christmas Hi Marged No Christmas recollections but New Year. Hi Gordon, Thank you very much indeed for your additional help, especially with Elizabeth Swift in the 1871 census, daughter of Pemberton and Martha Swift. I couldn't find them, well done Sherlock!! So that precludes her from being the baby buried in Holy Trinity, Hoylake in 1864. So now I must think that she may be another daughter for Alice Swift (nee Hughes), not registered at birth, but buried aged 11 months, too long after her husband's death to be his. Oh, Alice!! Hi Mary, Thank you for your reply. William Swift and Alice Hughes are my 2 x gt. grandparents. Jane (Hughes) Swift was the first child and illegitimate daughter of Alice Hughes, born 29 March 1850, baptised 5 May 1850 in Holy Trinity, Hoylake. William Swift and Alice Hughes married 8 April 1856 at St. Peter's, Liverpool. Together, they had Joseph, William (who married his 3rd cousin, Sarah Ann Hughes in 1889 in Holy Trinity, Hoylake), Thomas (all born Liverpool), and (Isabel) Ann Swift (my gt. grandmother who was born in Hoylake and married Peter Sherlock in 1885 at St. Bridget's, West Kirby). After William's death in 1862, Alice went on to have at least one other daughter, Emily Alice Swift, born 7 April 1867 in Hill Houses, West Kirby. Emily Alice Swift married William Smith (born Meols) in 1894 at Holy Trinity, Hoylake, and they had children, (that I know of so far), David, Sarah and William. Hi Gordon, Your messages on William Swift were a truly lovely surprise for me to see this morning. I've been stuck with William's census 1841/51 whereabouts for several years now, so that's a great boost. Can you tell me where Pitt Street, Liverpool, is in relation to St. Michael's and St. Peter's, Liverpool? I had been sent a baptism for a William Swift on 25 February 1829 at St. Michael's, Liverpool, son of Joseph, Butcher, which doesn't show on the IGI, but I have a hard copy in my files, and I'm wondering if the William Swift baptised in 1826 had maybe died, and the 1829 baptism in St. Michael's might be a subsequent child? I also want to try and find where a couple of the children of William Swift and Alice (nee Hughes) were baptised. They married on 8 April 1856 at St. Peter's. I have the baptism of Thomas Hughes on 6 February 1861 at St. Peter's, from the IGI, but need to find where Joseph (c. 1858) and William (c.1859) were baptised. They had moved to Hoylake by 1861. William Swift, senior was buried in Holy Trinity, Hoylake on 6 March 1862 aged 33; son Joseph on 1 March 1863 aged 5; son Thomas 7 January 1865 aged 5. There is also a burial for an Elizabeth Swift buried at Holy Trinity, Hoylake on 22 May 1864 aged 11 months. There is a matching birth registration for an Elizabeth Swift on Cheshire BMD, but of the Swift family of Neston, baptised Neston 26 June 1863, daughter of Pemberton and Martha Swift, butcher of Parkgate. I'm curious as to why she is buried at Holy Trinity, Hoylake? Again, many thanks indeed, Gordon. Your help is very much appreciated. Hello folks: I am wondering if anyone is going to the Liverpool History centre and could do a quick look-up for me. I live in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. My gg grandfather NEAL NILES was born 1816 in St. Maartens West Indies and moved back to Liverpool around 1839 where he was baptised at age 23. Neal was a shipsmith. His father was listed as William NILES shipwright who married Ellen SPARROW 1804 in Liverpool. and was christened as an adult 1809 Liverpool. They lived on Bolton Street along with Ellens sister Jane (WILLENGBECK) . William died 1818 in St. Maartens. I have an admonition that says..... Know all men present that we Ellen Niles of Liverpool in the county of Lancashire widow, Ellen Abram of the same place widow and Rachel Stevenson of the same place widow firmly bound ....1812 Ellen Niles was the widow of ..... William Niles late of the merchant ship Douglas belonging to the port of Liverpool in the county of Lancashire ...marine deceased The 16th day of March 1812 within....he died Nov 12, 1811. It is possible that the above William NILES was the grandfather of Neal Niles and father of William. I don't know what to do next in finding out more about this William of the admon. ns. I have looked through the transcriptions for Liverpool but they are missing information. I need the original parish records. If anyone is going to the Liverpool History Centre and could do a look-up for me on the original parish records for the below.....I would really appreciate it. The original parish films I ordered in won't arrive until almost the end of January and I am stuck untill then. 21 SEP 1809 William Niles c Saint Peter, Liverpool, Lancashire, England. I am hoping it will say how old he is and where born. 10 NOV 1839 Neal NIles c.St Nicholas, Liverpool, Lancashire, England. It might say where his parents were born, Thank you so much if anyone can help. Dianne
