Hello everyone, I am trying to establish the maiden name of my great-great grandmother Catherine Seddon. In the 1871 census they are living in Canal Street Bootle and their eldest child Mary is 9 meaning she was born circa 1861/2 which in turn suggests they were married around 1860. I have searched the marriage records from 1859-1862 and can only find one Thomas Seddon marrying a Catherine which took place in Manchester in March 1861. I do not know of any Manchester connection as Thomas was born in Ince Blundell. Can anyone suggest a way of establishing whether or not these are my relatives ? Best wishes for the new year. I have subscribed recently to "find my past" which I believe is the old Ancestry.com site. I have no idea what I am looking at so here is my question. (After some background) Elizabeth LAURIE born in 1866, Scotland. In the 1873 Census for 63 New Hedley St, Liverpool is located with her mum, dad & 1/2 sister. In the 1881 Census for 26 Boundary St East, Liverpool is located with her mum & dad . 1891 census for 34 Brocklebank Dock, West side, spelling of her surname is LAWRIE & she again is with her mum & dad. 1901 census only her mum & dad show up at 34 Langton Pier. On the census there is mention that Elizabeth was 'blind', one census states since birth. Anyway, I thought of searching for a death seeing how I haven't found her since 1891. Mind you, I haven't searched throughout the 1901 census (if it is on the site). I have come up with two possibilities - only if I am reading it correctly - but wish to see if there is anything else I can do to confirm my Elizabeth. July - Sept 1900 Laurie Elizaebeth, 43......St Albans 3a 382 April - June 1896 Laurie Elizabeth, 35......Pancras 1b 24 I have these two at the head of my list as I imagine that the number directly after her name is the age at time of death? Have I read it correctly which makes the first one born @1857 & the second @1861. Is it possible to search cemeteries in and around the areas? Her father died in 1905 & is buried without a headstone in the West Derby Cemetery. I have not as yet tracked her mother down, but as this was a second marriage thought it may be a bit harder to crack. What are the thought process out there that should be my next move? Am I on the correct list - I have also joined Eng-Liverpool list. With doing this subscription on Find My Ancestor - what will be the benefits if any. The pages I have viewed talk about buying credits, & I am working across three different countries (England / Scotland & Ireland) so wonder if this was the best deal after all? Hi Barbara She appears to be on the 1901 census, living alone and working as a brushmaker (I think that's what it says). And recorded as blind,. Image sent off list. Hi Pam, My 3 x great grandparents: William Hughes married Jane McIver, (born c.1810, Liverpool, daughter of James McIver, Mariner), at St. Nicholas, Liverpool on 24/12/1827. The certificate states he was an Ironfounder, married by Banns, and the witnesses were Samuel Jones and Martha Hall. Jane was obviously pregnant by dates of marriage and the birth of Alice. I think Alice was actually born in Liverpool, but baptised in St. Bridget's, West Kirby. In every census return, she gives her birthplace as Liverpool, and yet every record I have for her is based in West Kirby and Hoylake. She and her siblings, all baptised at St. Bridget's, West Kirby were: Alice, 20/4/1828, dau. of Will/Jane Hughes, Iron Moulder (Liverpool) Mary A., bap. 17/5/1829, dau. of Will/Jane Hughes, Fishmn, Hoose William bap. 30/6/1833, son of Will/Jane Hughes, Lab. Hoose Richard, born 7/2/1835, bap. 1/3/1835, son of Will/Jane Hughes, Ironfounder, Manchester William bap. 6/5/1838, son of Will/Jane Hughes, Ironmoulder, Hoose Mary A., William, and Richard all seem to have died young, but I haven't found their burials yet. The last born, William, died in 1839 aged 1, along with his father William, also 1839 aged 31. William, aged 1, appears to have been buried in West Kirby on 9 June 1839, and I think his father was buried on 19 May 1839 in St. Bridget's, although his age is given on Cprd as 17 instead of 31! Both deaths show in Cheshire BMD. Certificates received: 17/5/1839, Hoose, William Hughes, Male, 31 years, Moulder at the Cast Iron Work, Cause of Death: Debility, (informant), The X mark of Richard Hughes, brother, present at death, Hoose, registered on 1/6/1839, Registrar Samuel Ollive. 5/6/1839, Hoose, William Hughes, Male, 14 mos, Cause of Death: Debility, (informant) the X mark of Jane Hughes, mother, present at the death, Hoose, registered on 22/6/1839, Registrar Samuel Ollive. In the 1841 Census, the only child showing is Alice. After the death of her husband, William Hughes, Jane Hughes (nee McIver) remarried on 22 February 1841 to Joseph Powell at St. Nicholas, Liverpool. They had children: Thomas Powell, baptised 18 July 1841 at St. Bridget's, West Kirby Isabella Powell, baptised 2 June 1844 at Holy Trinity, Hoylake Jane Powell, baptised 4 July 1847 at St. Bridget's, West Kirby Mary Anne Powell, baptised 2 September 1849 at Holy Trinity, Hoylake so Jane Powell (formerly Hughes, nee McIver) was mother to Alice Hughes. There may be more Powell children yet to find. It's very interesting to see Edward Powell, born 1856, as an adopted son to Thomas and Ellen Sherlock. Surely there must be a connection somewhere. I would have loved to have tried pastures new in the 1950s but family commitments kept me here. Eventually my sister emigrated to Canada in 1980, and when I finally saw Alberta and British Columbia (too late, alas, in 1994) I knew I should have gone, just for the scenery! Marged Hello, I married in 1955 in Bebington Ches, worked in Birkenehead. I recall clearly that in 1955 -1958 several of our friends (similar age - mid 20s) left for Canada,New Zealand or Australia. The general feeling being that the future was brighter "off shore". I worked in a busy Dental Practice and can also recall that many patients had their Dental needs attend too on the NHS before emigrating. I have to add that although in 1955 we did not consider leaving England - we did leave in 1974 for NZ. I now live in Qld Australia. Merry Christmas. Maureen
