Thank you for remembering to take a look for the Cross, Gordon. I am amazed that the hoardings are still in place in this 2008 Year of Capital of Culture - thought at least Church Street would be cleared up by now. I did hear that the one-time HMV store where the work is going on is to be an entrance to the new shopping centre in Whitechapel, but not sure if this is true. My sister was married at St John's Knotty Ash, and my mother lived right behind the Church, so I just have heard the bell many many times. Marged Had a peek through the hoardings last Saturday. No sign of the paving flag with the brass cross in it, so looks like we're going to have to wait until the hoardings come down to see what's become of it. :-( Incidentally I stumbled across this recently on the Liverpool Record Office's site :- 'Church of St. John the Evangelist, Knotty Ash. The church was built with funds raised by Adam Dugdale, a Manchester merchant, at a cost of £5500. It was consecrated on 18th February 1836 by John Bird Sumner, Bishop of Chester. The bell, however, dates from 1707 and was originally at St. Peter's, Church Street'. So at least one other memento of old St Peter's lives on. :-) Regards Gordon From: "Marged" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, May 20, 2008 12:30 PM Subject: [ENG-MERSEYSIDE] St Peter's Church Cross >Mention of St Peter's in Gordon's mail prompts me to wonder if the brass >Cross is still in place in the paving flag outside what was most recently >the HMV store in Church Street? >I have tried to look each time I've been to Liverpool, but it's always been >boarded off and covered with builders' walk boards. >Someone did tell me that instead of the store being gutted and re-fitted, >it's going to be the entrance through to the new shopping area in Paradise >Street. >Can anyone confirm or otherwise about both the Cross and the entrance? >Marged ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

Dear sir I have been given your email address as a Liverpool genealogy group who may be able to help me. I live in Sydney Australia but my ancestors on my mother¹s side all came from the Liverpool area and I can only find out what is on the ancestry site. But I would like to see if I can find: 1. if there are any relatives still living in and around Liverpool. 2. my great great grandparents owned a confectionery business in the second half of the 1800¹s until they migrated and I have been unable to find out anything about the business. 3. Anything on the Sanderson family Some details are: Point 1 Thomas (33) & Elizabeth (32) Chapman 1851 England Census shows them living at 8 James St, Liverpool. Their children were: Clara (9), Heywood (8), Elizabeth (7), Louise (5), Stanley (2) and Edith (a few mnths). Thomas is a fruit merchant, born in Manchester c1818. In 1861 the family lived at 118 Duke St, Liverpool and by 1871 they lived in 18 Parkfield Rd, Toxteth Park. My main interest is Heywood who is my great great grandfather. He married Jane Wilson Sanderson in 1867. They had 3 children: Walter Heywood, Edith Maude and Ida. Walter went into the merchant navy and stayed in the UK while Heywood, Jane, Edith and Ida emigrated to New Zealand and then on to Australia. Walter Heywood Chapman married Ellen Jane Davidson in 1892 and in the 1901 Census was aged 33, 3rd Mate in Steamer, living at 462 Hawthorne Rd, Bootle Cum Linacre, Liverpool. At that stage they had two daughters, Mary Catharine (7) and Edith J. (5). I believe Mary C. Chapman married a Pearson in West Derby in 1919 and Edith married either an Alfred List in Hinckley in 1918 or a John B Parry in West Derby in 1925 (I¹m not sure at this stage which one it is). I have also found a son, Walter Heywood Chapman, born in 1904 in Ormskirk, Lancashire. Would there be any relatives of Walter Heywood Chapman snr left in and around Liverpool that you would know of? Point 2 Heywood Chapman took over his father¹s confectionery business in the 1860¹s. The 1961 Census states that he employed 2 men, 6 women, 1 girl and 1 boy so it sounds like a fairly large business. Heywood migrated to New Zealand in 1876 and his wife Jane took over running the business until she too migrated to NZ in 1885. We do not know what happened to the business and any information would be great. Point 3 Jane Wilson Chapman (nee Sanderson) was born on 25th March 1845 at 47 Great Charlotte St, Liverpool. Her father was John Sanderson (wine merchant), born c1820 in Scotland, and her mother was Catherine Sanderson (nee Lyon), born c1823 in Liverpool. In the 1851, the family was living at 4 Adelaide Bldgs, 8 Ranelagh Pl, Liverpool John was a House Agent & Bed Manufacturer. There was a son, Lord John who was born 1847 in Manchester and I believe he died in 1900, aged 53. I don¹t have many other details of the Sanderson¹s and any help would be appreciated. Are you able to help please? Regards Diana Pecar Sydney, Australia

Hi there one and all, I do not profess to be a football fan, but I do know of one story about Dixie Dean. He apparently rode a motorbike from Chester towards Hope (near Wrexham) and cut a 90 degree bend up without batting an eyelid, by all accounts he missed it completely and carried on as though nothing had happened. It could be just a tall tale, but you never know. I do, however know that he kept a pub in Chester city centre called "The Dublin Packet" which is still going today and is located on the Town Hall. http://www.chesterwiki.com/Dublin_Packet I hope that this helps Regards Denise Lawrence-Jones

The GRO index shows a marriage in the Dec quarter of 1943 at Crosby between Frank W D SHELDRAKE and Ida Emily WOODCOCK. I have Frank on the 1901 census and the GRO index for his birth. Can anyone tell me anything about any children Frank and Ida may have had. David

Hi all, Just wondering if anyone can help me out with Dixie Deans' family tree? I descend from a Jane Ledder, nee Dean who was baptised in 1798 in Wallasey. She was the daughter of Henry Dean. Murray Leonard
Hi Murray As a lifelong Evertonian, and with over 150 DEAN's in my extended family tree, I went down this road some time ago hoping against hope that the great man might prove to be a blood-relative of mine. :-) Researching his family on-line is rather unrewarding, but a major clue lies here :- http://www.oxforddnb.com/public/dnb/31018.html Which leads to this, when Dixie was still just a twinkle in his dad's eye :- 1901 Census RG13/3393 folio 162 page 32 William DEAN, 28, railway engine stoker, CHS Chester Sarah B, wife, 25, CHS Chester Elsie M, daur, 4, CHS Birkenhead Florence M, daur, 1, CHS Birkenhead Sarah A, daur, 1 month, CHS Birkenhead Louise BRETT, sister-in-law, S, 21, cook domestic, CHS Chester Dennis, brother-in-law, 16, railway engine cleaner, CHS Chester Gilbert BERESFORD, boarder, S, 18, railway engine cleaner, CHS Chester And this, to find Dixie's paternal grandmother :- 1891 Census RG12/2863 folio 70 page 24 85 Christleton Road, Chester Mary E DEAN, W, 42, chapel keeper, YKS Thirsk Sarah H, daur, S, 20, mother's help, CHS Chester William, son, 18, railway stoker, CHS Chester John, son, 16, railway engine cleaner, CHS Chester And to find both his paternal grandparents together :- 1881 Census RG11/3557 folio 21 page 40 85 Christleton Road, Chester Thomas DEAN, 33, chapel keeper & gardener, CHS Chester Mary E, wife, 33, YKS Sandhutton Sarah H, daur, 10, CHS Cheshire William, son, 8, CHS Chester John, son, 6, CHS Chester Thomas Henry, son, 4, CHS Chester Chas FLETCHER, lodger, 23, railway porter. Incidentally, you and I are almost certainly related one way or another, since Jane DEAN (b1798 Wallasey) features in my extended family tree. If I'm not mistaken, Jane had an aunt Jenny DEAN (b1757 Wallasey) who married a William GARNER and had a daughter Elizabeth (b1786 Wallasey) who married John EVANS on 1 June 1808 in Wallasey St Hilary? John & Elizabeth (Dean) EVANS' son William (b1810 Seacombe) married, on 17 August 1835 in Liverpool St Nicholas, my first cousin 4 times removed Mary SHERLOCK (b1819 Great Meols). There's also a close association between my EVANS family and the LEDDERs which might be pursuing some time, one of my 7g-grandfather's being a John LEATHER (b1632 Puddington), whose grandaughter Ann LEADER married John EVANS (b1704 Puddington) on 26 February 1739 in Burton St Nicholas. There's a history of the name mutating from the original LEATHER used in South-east Wirral in the early 1600's, via LEEDER and LEADER to the eventual LEDDER in Wallasey by the mid-1700's. I'd be particularly interested to know whether you have any detailed information regarding the parents of Jane DEAN's husband Edward LEDDER, born 1797 in Wallasey?
