Hi Anne. This is great, many thanks. I'll pass it on to Jan who contacted me via my Allerton Cemetery site regarding the grave of one of William's nephews who died at the age of 10. When she asked me if I could point her in the right direction for William I doubt she expected this kind of information - I certainly didn't think I could find it. Wonderful! Thanks also to Tomas for pointing me towards Crockford's, to Gordon whose experience in his younger days will also be passed on, and to Peter for the late 1800s information. Best wishes, Jeff ----- Original Message ----- From: "Anne Peat" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, June 28, 2008 1:17 PM Subject: Re: [ENG-MERSEYSIDE] William Herbert Lewis > As Tomas said, you need Crockford's Clerical Directory, which lists > all Church of England clergy still alive with a history of their > training and posts. > > Only the current Crockford's is on line - and you have to pay a > subscription. > There used to be someone who did look-ups from historical Crockfords > for a small fee but that site has gone now - and the firm that did > CDs has also gone. > > However, I rescued 3 20th century Crockford's when our Diocesan Office > was throwing them out, so you are in luck. > > I have 1927, 1938 and 1957/8 ( none published in early 40's because of > wartime paper restrictions, and William Herbert Lewis is in them aall > > This is the latest ( 1957/8 entry - so he was still alive then > > LEWIS, William Herbert > St JOhn's College, Durham: BA 1914, MA 1918, deaconed 1915, priested > 1916 by Bishop of Liverpool. Hi Jeff So not so early 1900's, according to Anne Peats's reply? :-) As a member of the Lifeboys, Boys Brigade (33rd Liverpool) and choir at St George's Church, Longview, I quite often attended services at Huyton St Michael between 1947 and 1952, when William Herbert LEWIS would have been the incumbent. Can't say I remember him, though. As Tomas said, you need Crockford's Clerical Directory, which lists all Church of England clergy still alive with a history of their training and posts. Only the current Crockford's is on line - and you have to pay a subscription. There used to be someone who did look-ups from historical Crockfords for a small fee but that site has gone now - and the firm that did CDs has also gone. However, I rescued 3 20th century Crockford's when our Diocesan Office was throwing them out, so you are in luck. I have 1927, 1938 and 1957/8 ( none published in early 40's because of wartime paper restrictions, and William Herbert Lewis is in them aall This is the latest ( 1957/8 entry - so he was still alive then LEWIS, William Herbert St JOhn's College, Durham: BA 1914, MA 1918, deaconed 1915, priested 1916 by Bishop of Liverpool. Crockfords is the annual register of clergymen. I don't know but it should be on-line somewhere or someone will have access to a copy. As part of a one-name project, I have now collected all the BUSH births from the GRO indexes of civil registrations from 1837 to 2005 into a single database of more than 32,000 individuals. Over time, I shall add the marriages, deaths and perhaps even census records. But in the meantime, if anyone would like a look-up, please email me off-list. Les Bedford, UK
Merseyside is an area in the North West of England which includes Liverpool and also a lot of other places. Merseyside is a Metropolitan county formed in the 1970s and as the name suggests, is the area either side of the River Mersey I stand to be corrected on my statements! I live in Southport, which is geographically in Lancashire, but now Merseyside is part of my postal address because the district I live in has been designated part of Merseyside. As regards lists, you can ask any question you like about Liverpool or any other part of Merseyside. Marged Hello - Could someone please explain the difference between the Merseyside and Liverpool lists? I don't want to post to the wrong one! Thanks! Hi Diana, Gent is short for 'gentleman' - it means he had sufficient private income from land or investments not to have to work. The "T' and 'E & T' show who he voted for! If you look at the introductory page it gives the Key E = Ewart and T = Thornely - both on the Liberal side. Mr Ewart came top of the poll! Not sure about the graveyard and cemetery Mary - Don doesn't seem to think there was one in 1958 but he doesn't really remember. They are combined with Our Lady Queen of Martyrs. This is what is going to happen in the Catholic Church now because of the very great shortage of priests - my own parish is combined with another, and our three friars serve the two parishes. Marged I remeber you telling me about your hubby's adventure at St Swithins I guess the combining of the churches makes it an end of an era ! sad but still one can never take away the memories I know my Mum was not happy when they built the new church in the fifties and made the old church into a club Which has me thinking whar would have happend to the graveyard and cemetery is it still there ?
