    3. My mother used to work with a lady called Miss Nangle in Lewis's, during WW2. I've never known anyone else with the name. Marged Good morning, all I've just finished transcribing the list of teachers form the 1903 Liverpool Education Committee handbook. This only covers non-denominational schools - nevertheless, there are 1589 in total! Haven't got round to manual instruction centres, yet though. I do have some additional information, like salaries and in some cases promotion dates; if you find someone of interest, please contact me and I will send you the image. Found some surnames I'd not come across before including: PIGHTLING, KNIPE, NANGLE, NISH, NETHERY, TREEBY. Enjoy! Thanks to Marj, Paul GOODMAN, Val GARNER, Lorraine FURLONG, Jane MARRIOTT and Tomas CHRISTIE for their help with this project http://www.liverpool-schools.co.uk/html/1903_handbook.html All the best Rachel ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

    3. I don't know how much the pension would be for a War Widow, Geoffrey, but there certainly was a pension. Both my grandmothers were widowed in WW1, and left with children. I think they had quite a generous pension, but when they both remarried, the pension stopped. My father, being the son of a sailor lost at sea in the war, was admitted to the Training Ship "Indefatigable". I don't know of any similar arrangements made for my mother's brothers, whose father was also lost at sea, but perhaps they just didn't ask for it. Marged Following Marged's request for questions on Liverpool Life, I was wondering if anyone knew of any special arrangements for the widows of those killed in WW1? My grandmother was widowed when her husband was killed in June 1918. She was left with 6 children aged between 2 and 16. They all went into different types of jobs and the family history is that there was some scheme ( like apprenticeships ) to help the children. How much pension would she get? Thanks Geoff

    3. There were a number of provisions made for war widows both during and after World War One, and although I can't tell you the exact figures which were paid out, I think that much of it depended on the status of the husband himself, whether officer or other rank, and the number of dependants. Charitable institutions also ran programmes alongside [belated] government initiatives, though both being barely sufficient as a long-term solution, with a number of widows and families falling victim to poverty, and some women quickly re-marrying. The National Archive hold a number of documents in the "Widows' and Dependants' Pension Case Files" at PIN 82. It's by no means comprehensive, but is perhaps worth a look. Amongst the scam sites are: http://www.freebmd.com http://www.cheshire.bmd.org.uk http://www.wiltshire.bmd.org.uk I.e. subtle, but significant differences between these names and the real ones, which are respectively: http://www.freebmd.org.uk http://www.cheshirebmd.org.uk http://www.wiltshirebmd.org.uk There are several others, all along the same style, simply adding an extra 'dot' or changing the domain type from ".org.uk" into ".com" My guess is that any site that ends in ".bmd.org.uk" i.e. with a dot in front of the "bmd" is likely to be a scam, as this part of the web site name is known as the domain name and it can be prefixed by any other text, such as www.cheshire as in the example above. As UKBMD aims to link to all available genuine BMD and census web sites, my recommendation is simply that you add the UKBMD's site address into your "Favorites" list on your browser and then you can be assured that you will only be shown valid web sites. Safe surfing ! Ron Fitzpatrick, Thanks to, Bob Kirk. Kathy Binns. Gordon.W.Evans. Leslie Bush. Christine Cunningham.
