Hi Gordon, Many thanks indeed for taking the trouble to transcribe the 1891 census entries for me. That makes things so much clearer. Best regards, Von

Bill wote :- >sorry mate I am not related to Sue Adams! No problem, Bill. :-) The reason I asked is that Sue (whom I had the pleasure of meeting when she was over in the UK a couple of years ago) is a direct descendant of the ROWLAND(S) of Wallasey (in the 1700's), Little Meols, Irby and Oxton. Hi again Von A couple of amendments to my last post :- (i) Hoylake Holy Trinity PR's have the baptism on 19 August 1861 of a William Henry SHERLOCK, son of Mary Ann JONES of Hoose, single woman. So it was wrong of me to say that the child was both registered and baptised as William Henry JONES. (ii) The William Henry SHERLOCK of Hoose who was buried in Hoylake Holy Trinity on 16 May 1886, aged 29, was of course the son of William & Margaret (Carroll) SHERLOCK, not the son of Henry & Mary Ann.. According to my family tree the Aberystwyth-born William Henry SHERLOCK married Alice BLYTHING (b1883 Rock Ferry) in Rock Ferry St Peter in 1904, this couple having the following children, all born in Hoylake :- 1905 William Henry (m Winifride FUREY 1929) 1907 Dorothy (m Albert TOTTEY 1931) 1909 Harold (m Bessie JONES c1936) 1910 Elsie (m George William ROBERTS 1934) 1920 Alice Couldn't tell where I got this information, I'm afraid - probably a combination of the Hoylake MI's + an e-mail from a direct descendant which I'd have lost during my catastrophic computer crash in August 2007. Regards Gordon
Hi Von This one takes a bit of getting your head around, but here goes :- Henry SHERLOCK (b1839 Hoose) married Mary Ann JONES (b1839 Little Sutton) in Liverpool St Peter in 1860. Shortly before the marriage Mary Ann gave birth to a son who was both registered and baptised as William Henry JONES, but who was known during his comparatively short life (he died in 1886 aged 29) as William Henry SHERLOCK. Henry and Mary Ann's first legitimate child was a Joseph SHERLOCK (b1862 Hoose). William Henry married an Ellen BRYAN from Tipperary in Liverpool St Nicholas in 1880 and baptised a son William Henry SHERLOCK on 18 January 1882 in Hoylake Holy Trinity. In the 1891 Census this child is shown as aged 10, born in Aberystwyth, living in Lake Place, Hoylake, with his grandmother Mary A SHERLOCK (nee JONES). The 1881 Census for Wales has :- RG11/5445 folio 130 page 28 24 High Street, Aberystwyth Mary HUGHES, head, W, charwoman, born Middlesex Mary Jane STOWE, niece, U, 18, general servant, born Middlesex Free BMD has :- Marriages 1882 SeptQ Aberystwyth 11b/95 Joseph SHERLOCK Mary Jane STOW Joseph and Mary Jane SHERLOCK had the following children, all born in Hoose:- 1883 Joseph (d1883) 1884 Mary Elizabeth 1886 Joseph Henry (d1887) 1888 William Albert 1891 Florence Evelyn 1893 Harry 1896 John (d1896) 1897 Joseph (d1898) Mary Jane (Stow) SHERLOCK (born c1862 London Woolwich) of course died in Hoose in 1899, aged 37. The big question to me is whether the William Henry SHERLOCK, baptised in Hoylake on 18 January 1882 as a child of William Henry and Ellen SHERLOCK, was in reality the illegitimate child of Mary Jane STOW - "adopted" by this couple shortly before her marriage to William Henry's brother Jospeh in 1882? Hi Mike, Thanks for your reply, but you will have seen Pam's and Kathy's replies for 1897. Unfortunately, life changes for us all, better half had a serious illness over the last several months, and is only just starting to recover. It's great that I can finally start to take a good interest in family history again, but I'm also working now. Hi Kathy, Yes, I've just recently been glancing at the updated site, it's great, but I hadn't seen the 1883 baptism. Many thanks for that. BTW, Lifeboat Day at Hoylake was rather fab this year!
