Hi all, For the whole of November, Ancestry are offering free access to their WWI service records, pension records, and medal cards. You just need to register with the site, but there is no subscription to pay. I received this information from a posting on another list and have visited the site. Ancestry seems a bit slow to me this evening - so demand might be high. Kathy Wirral
Mary Fletcher CLARKE was born at Runcorn in 1847. She was the daughter of Peter CLARKE and Sarah ECCLES. The family's usual residence was in Liverpool, but Peter, a Customs Officer, had temporarily been posted to Runcorn. The last record I have of Mary is as a witness to her brother's wedding in 1864. I can find no record of her on the census after that, nor any record that I can definitely say is her marriage or death. Does anyone know anything of Mary? David
Gordon, I bragged like Mad, most got a Photo, I will send you one or two off list. I am sure I told you but proud to do it again. Hi Ron >My oldest Grandson .....is now a Father in his own right and produced a >Daughter that became a fifth living generation in June. I vaguely recollect you mentioning on the list about this time last year that you were expecting to become a great-grandad in mid-2008. Didn't notice any announcement, but then I have had a lot of problems with my mails this year and didn't like to ask in case something had gone wrong. Belated congratulations! WT Gilley worked well through retirement at the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry Bodmin IOW (which is now a museum) http://www.lightinfantry.org.uk/regiments/dcli/duke_boerwar.htm His wife ELLEN GILLEY died 1901 in child birth buried Colombo cemetery /Ceylon,. Ellen also lost other babies so I Ellen lived in India due to her husband WILLIAM THOMAS GILLEY being in the army.
On the day when we are celebrating the Armistice and remembering our war dead - and as we approach the REAL day of 11th November, I would like to remember both my grandfathers who died as young men with families in WW1. Able Seaman William Hughes, lost at Gallipoli age 35, leaving a widow and three children - the youngest was my mother, only four weeks old. He never saw her. It seems when his ship, the "Cornwallis", arrived at Gallipoli, after picking up ANZAC troops in Australia, he volunteered to row troops ashore, and was shot down by the Turks, who were waiting for them in the hills (my grandmother's words) Able Seaman Robert Edward Mackay Campbell Ingham, aged 35, who died off the coast of Northern Ireland when his ship the "Laurentic", was torpedoed by the Germans. He left two children, a daughter and a son - the son was my father, who was five years old at the time. By a strange coincidence these two seamen's names face each other in the basement of Liverpool Town Hall on the War Memorial Plaques. While I am alive, they will never be forgotten, even though I never knew them and I doubt there is anyone left alive now who did know them. Perhaps others on this list have names they would like to put forward, so that we can all think of them in our own way at this time. Marged
