I have found a notice in the London Gazette which appears to suggest voluntary bankruptcy, ie "proceedings for liquidation by arrangement with creditors, instituted by William Travis of 243 Manchester Road, Oldham......" etc. This was dated 18 April 1879. However, I can see from the census that he was still described as a Boot and Shoe Maker employing 2 people, at the same address, in 1881. How is this possible?
