Hi Andy I have just done a few quick searches on Ancestry for your James and John in 1841 and 1851. There certainly don't seem to be any obvious matches. Are you sure that James was born in Manchester? My Murray ancestors came to Manchester from Ireland in the 1850s and I was wondering if that could have been the case for yours as well, which would explain why they weren't on the earlier censuses. He was born about 1838, but the earliest record I have for him is his wedding certificate in 1859.(I have him on the 1861 and 1871 census, and his death certificate.) If I recall correctly-I began this around 15 years ago and had a break(!) the reasons for my struggle to find him before 1859- I applied for a couple of birth certificates for around 1838, but received a letter stating that the name of the father was wrong. (From his wedding certificate his father's name was John Murray, a weaver.) Next, with him getting married in 1859, I tried the 1861 census. I found him now living with his wife and two young children at a different address to where he was living two years previous on his wedding certificate. So I thought if I found this address it may be his parents home. It was 45 Angel Street, which I think was a lodging house. So without knowing his mothers name I am struggling to find/prove between 1838 and 1859,a James Murray, born in Manchester around 1838, son of John Murray, weaver, Andy On Thu, Feb 21, 2013 at 6:25 AM, Joanne Humphrey <joanne1humphrey@gmail.com>wrote: > Hi Andy > > I am also researching Murray ancestors in Manchester, but there are so > many of them and mine don't have unusual forenames so what I know is a > bit sparse. > > They came from Londonderry in the 1850s and consisted of Catherine, b > about > 1803 and her children Susan, Margaret, Catherine, James and William.
