I would like to thank Elaine, Joanne, Peter and Mike for their replies . I found the workhouse site that Joanne mentioned very interesting. It was nice to know that by 1951 when Joseph died aged 88 it was not a workhouse or an asylum but a hospital. He was suffering from a long list of ailments on his death certificate. Going through my records I found that one of Joseph's daughters died there aged 69 in 1968 of cancer and that one of my husband's sister was born and died there in 1942. Thanks again I will keep looking for more information about Joseph and his "cycle shop" in the front room of his house on Moston Lane. Carol
