    3. Hi Mike It's quite possible that William was a quarryman at some point. The majority of records list him as a general labourer, which is of limited use, however, he was born in an area of Co Durham where just about everyone was a coal miner. In 1897 when he married in Leicestershire he said that he was a labourer on the railway works, I suspect more specifically he was a navvy. His children were all born between 1898 and 1914 and most of their BCs state that he was a general labourer or outdoor labourer, with the exception of one in Kent in 1904 when he was a sewer worker. In 1911-1912 he was one of the hundred or so previously unemployed men who were employed to dig the boating lake at Heaton Park and at the outbreak of WW1, at the age of 39 he joined a tunnelling company, which I believe was a division dominated by men who had previously been miners or navvies. On the 1901 and 1911 censuses he is listed as a navvy. I have contacted Heaton Park and have searched the available railway workers' records and have had no luck. I don't suppose you would happen to know the name of the company which employed the quarry workers in Norden? If I could track down any employment records for William I might eventually be able to find the details of his birth which have eluded me for almost 20 years! Many thanks Joanne >>:-~:-~:-~:-~:-~:-~:-~:-~:-~:-~: >> >>Except for personal messages, please post replies to the list. >>Other people can learn from them! >> >>Be sure list mail is in PLAIN TEXT. >> >>Please SNIP when replying. >> >>Buy or sell family research items on the GEN-MAT-UKI mailing list.
