    3. Anthony, Many thanks again as I have been baffled by the information below which you have mentioned. I had seen this previously. I obtained the birth certificate of Joe Solomon which shows Dora's surname as Finestein. Joe also enlisted in 1918, his mother is shown as Dora. I also have Joseph's death cert but no clues whatsoever on this. However I did find a burial record which shows David as his brother but no further clues. He was born as Joe Solomon but Joseph on death cert. I next wondered if Dora was mother of Joe but not the other children but then a Sarah was born after him. Could it have been to do with the language barrier? Baffled yes I am. I believed from the BMD records that Barnett died in 1950 aged 84, Dora in 1923. Just not sure where to look now as certainly have kept looking for a marriage but without success so far. Pat

    1. [ENG-MAN] SOLOMON childern listed on the 1911 census

    3. Greetings, Some of this is a stab in the dark, but these are the birth references I gleaned for the Barnett and Dora(h) SOLOMON children listed on the 1911 census. SOLOMON Saul - Cheetham Manchester CHE/84/4 - 1893 (LancashireBMD) SOLOMON Yetta - Cheetham Manchester CHE/89/85 -1895 (LancashireBMD) (1901 census - listed as Hettie, 1911 as Julia?) SOLOMON Leah - Stoke T. 6b 190 - Mar 1897 (FreeBMD) SOLOMON David Stockport 8a 64 - Jun 1898 (FreeBMD) SOLOMON Joe Stockport 8a 53 - Mar 1900 (FreeBMD) SOLOMON Sarah Stockport 8a 55 - Mar 1903 (FreeBMD) I'm thinking, if Joseph was registered as Joe, why wouldn't Solomon be registered as Saul? Yetta/Hetty/Julia... that's another story (and my stab in the dark)! No mention of Mother's name anywhere. I'm thinking that you may want certs for Saul, maybe Yetta, and probably David. hth David

    3. Pat, >>which could be Petersberg but he is listed as being Polish. >> She was from Russia and is listed as being from Nycotod, and haven't a >> clue where that could be or where to start searching. This is Jewish >> family... On the Ellis Island database and also on Ebay the town/village of Peterkov, Russia shows up as a place of origin for immigrants and also on some old Judaica. Could be the same as Pheterckof or Pertucof. On the search engine for Jewish immigrants created by Steve Morse you can search by surname or by place of origin. I saw a Petrikoff/Piotrkow [Pol] and other variations. There are SZULMANS from Petrokow, Russia and ZALEMANS from Piotrkow, Poland. Petrokow [Rus spelling] - Piotrkow [Polish]. It may be the same place. http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/eidb/ellisgold.html With Jewish immigrants look closely at any neighbors, especially in the earlier censuses. Since Pozner was a son-in-law and came from the same place, that helps. In the Ellis Island database there are two Finestines, 31 Finesteins and more than 900 Feinsteins. >>why wouldn't Solomon be registered as Saul? Dave's suggestion may be correct: On the ship Grosser Kurfuerst, one Saul Finestein [24] from Manchester, b in England in 1880, landed in NYC in 1904, going to his father Myer Finestein already in NYC. In 1901 the Myer Feinstein family are in Cheetham and the son is called SOLOMON Feinstein, so Solomon and Saul can be interchangeable. Could these Feinsteins be relatives? Liane
