I never thought about St Mary's Hospital (Manchester) originally being a workhouse, but you are probably right. I am aware that lots of the old hospitals were! I have done some Googling tonight, to try and get info on this....I've come up with a Manchester Workhouse (not Crumpsall) - but nothing yet to say it was definitely St Mary's. St Mary's has moved around a bit in Manchester, the hospital that stands their is a fairly new one, the old St Mary's where I was born in 1964 may have been a work house. I do believe the hospital has been going since 1752 but at various locations. Hope this is of some help.
