I have two questions today. First, back to the CROFT family again. Benjamin was the victualler of the Edinburgh Castle in Ancoats for a while in the early 19thC. He married Sarah BRIDG(E)FORD (not BUDDYFORD as in the IGI) in St Mary's, Eccles on 8 November 1807. I have a copy of the entry in the parish register. His daughter, Sarah, married my ggrandfather on 19 April 1841 in St Saviors, Manchester. One of the witnesses was Mary CROFT. Mary could be a sister, sister-in-law or even mother of Benjamin. Or none of these if she is simply a parish clerk witness. The IGI will reveal nothing of any relationship between Benjamin and Mary and there is no entry of Benjamin's birth showing parents. Eccles registers have not yet been transcribed for Lancs Parish Clerk so I can't look there. It's too big an ask of Lancashire Record Office to go through the whole of 1778 looking for his birth. Does anyone have any further ideas as to where I may look myself. Or is there sks who would kindly do a look up in the Eccles PRs for me for that year? I would be most grateful. Second, I have already mentioned the error in the IGI transcription. Has anyone experience of contacting those responsible for the IGI's upkeep in an effort to get something corrected? How ought I to set about it? Thanks for any help. Ruth
Unless things have changed, changes are not done to IGI records. They will take a new entry. Here is what they say under FAQ: Can I make changes to a record in the International Genealogical Index record if I can prove it is in error? A. No. The International Genealogical Index contains information as it appeared on the original record or in a submission. It cannot be changed. An alternative to correcting the information is to submit the accurate information to Pedigree Resource File by visiting www.familysearch.org and using the Share option. Hi Ruth, I had a look at the IGI entry you mentioned, and you can see at the bottom of the entry, on all three entries they are submission by a patron. So there can always be mistakes there. On the LDS Library Catalogue, there are several Parish reg. on film for Eccles, but I didn't see St.Mary's. You could check there, just in case I missed it. If you do find one, or any others of interest, you can attend any LDS Family History centre and order the film in, then read at your leisure [they give you a month] when it comes in.Costs 5dollars in Australia to do this. You can also get a photocopy of any entry relevant. Also If there is a source no: on the bottom of the IGI entry, you could find out who put in the submission by ordering that film.If there is a batch no:[double click and it will come up in the IGI search engine] you can find out what else they put in at the same time. Hope this has been of some help to you, Yours in Genealogy, Jan, in sunny Queensland, Australia ----- Original Message ----- From: <RuthGenda@aol.com> To: <eng-manchester@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, June 04, 2008 12:34 AM Subject: [ENG-MAN] CROFT and IGI CORRECTIONS >I have two questions today. > > First, back to the CROFT family again. Hi Ruth, Regarding St. Mary's, Eccles, I have ordered the film at the Edmonton LDS some years ago, and I'm pretty sure it went back to at least the 1700's. Good luck finding your marriage David
