    1. [ENG-MAN] Charles FLETCHER 1841
    2. Please can anyone help with my search for my 2xggrandfather Charles FLETCHER in the 1841 Census. He was born in 1787 in Newark Nottinghamshire and moved to Manchester c 1820. He was a clerk and bookkeeper. By 1841 his wife Elizabeth had died (date unknown) and he may then have been living with a second partner/housekeeper also named Elizabeth and his children Mary b.1814, William b. 1815, Sarah Tettle b. 1817, Ann b.1819 (all 4 born in Newark), Henry b,1823 and John Francis b.1825 (both born in Manchester) The first address I have for him is in the 1824-5 Pigot and Dean's directory when he is living at 29 Bridgewater Street, Salford, and he is listed as a malt and flour dealer. An unidentified directory for the same time frame lists him as a malt and hop dealer (agent). I know that he had connections with Holes Brewery in Newark and Strangeways Brewery in Manchester and that he retained his own malt office in Newark for some time. Chorlton Row is cited as his address on his son's birth certificate in 1825. By 1828 he had moved to Wilton Street, Oxford Street. He signs the register at his son William's marriage in April 1841 and his daughter Ann's in 1845 - his occupation is given as 'agent' both times. Pigot's 1841 directory has a Charles FLETCHER at 3 Princess Street listed as a conveyancer. A step too far, perhaps? I have trawled the Genes Reunited site and I may have located them all living in 'Chorlton' - but of course that is all the free information I can get without joining. I do have the Stepping Stones CD of the 1841 Census, but there is no person index to it - only an area index. It is a very slow and painful task then to go through every street and court and yard in the hope that ancestors can be found. Would be grateful for any help. Ruth
