    1. [ENG-MAN] Bridgeford/Cheetwood
    2. Hello Listers, I think it was me who started this trail. I am searching for more/any information on one of my 2xggrandfathers, John BRIDGFORD and his wife Hannah (BAMFORD) married 19 June 1783. In Pigots 1821-22 Directory his entry reads: Bridgford John, nursery and seedsman, 104 Market-st.; house Cheetwood Mike very kindly sent me maps of Cheetwood including one which showed Cheetwood House. This I ruled out as being too grand. I have now searched the directory for 'Cheetwood' and have found that no street names are given for that particular area, as they are for other areas of Manchester. Which is a pity. Pat did a great search of the 1841 Census for gggparents John and Hannah but no luck. So I am presuming that they died sometime btween 1820 (when info for the 1821 Directory would have been collected) and 1837 when civil registration began. If anyone has other suggestions for sources of evidence for this time period in Manchester that I could explore I'd be grateful. I noticed web addresses for burial records here the other day. Where would someone living in Cheetwood be buried at that time? Has anyone experience of rates/tax records that might help? Voters registrations/poll books? Obits (too early, I think)? Just to fill out John's story - he started his commercial life as a hairdresser, 6 Old Shambles, in 1794 Scholes Directory and in Scholes 1797 he was a hair-dresser, seedsman and florist, 2 Smithy-door! None of these addresses mean anything to me but it would seem that he diversified and prospered! Thanks for your help. Ruth
