Hi Kathryn I'm sorry if I misled you - "my" Thomas William TAYLOR (my great grandfather) was born in Carlisle. 22 June 1884. He moved to Manchester sometime after the 1901 census was taken as I found him on that in Carlisle. He was shown as unemployed so I guess he came to Manchester for work. Family story (unconfirmed as there isn't anyone left to ask) was that his brother Robert was already here and so he joined him. Robert was born 19 August 1870 in Dearham, Cumberland. I know he married a girl from Liverpool called Martha (born about 1872). They had 3 children listed on the 1901 census: Gladys, born about 1894, Liverpool. Thomas Edward, born about 1896, Liverpool. Robert E, born about 1897, Manchester. Actually, in view of the above sparse details on Robert's family could someone advise me on how to move forward? Going off the details on the 1901 census entry I found, this family were living at 113 Baslow Street, Ardwick St. Silas Ecclesiastical District. Robert is a Grocer's Assistant. Does anyone know where this would be in Ardwick? I've searched (in the past) the bmd's for the marriage and the children's births but not found anything that fitted. I did get one certificate for a Gladys born around the same time but it wasn't this one. My dad thought Robert was in Reddish in 1942 but can't be sure. it's all so vague but it's all I have to go off for now! It doesn't look like we have a connection Kathyrn - sorry. I'm assuming that the surname of TAYLOR was as common in Manchester in that time period as it was in Cumberland (or Cumbria as it is now). I'd be grateful for any ideas. Baslow street is on the north east border of Ardwick. My map dated 1894 places it in Beswick. I will send you this map section.
