Hi folks, Thanks for the interesting discussion about burials. I have been looking at the site http://www.burialrecords.manchester.gov.uk but it doesn't offer much detail for those who don't know Manchester's geography. Also it doesn't seem to give any date ranges. For instance, I did a search for someone who died in Hulme in 1866 but it was negative, so I don't know if the cemetery simply isn't covered, or if the cemetery is covered by their data but it is too early. The site does give this as part of it's answer in the FAQ about why a search on it may turn up nothing... > The person may have been buried in a cemetery that is not operated > by Manchester City Council and therefore no records are held for > these burials within this system. > > The person may have been buried within church grounds and these > records are not available on the online system. > > The person may be buried in a cemetery, which, although managed by > Manchester City Council, may now be closed. The records contained > in the system are from currently in use cemeteries managed by > Manchester City Council. Is there a web page somewhere which lists the city's cemeteries, preferably with the dates they opened/closed? Many of the WALTONs I am researching lived in Hulme or just over the river in Salford. Which cemeteries are likely to be relevant (civic/ protestant/Church of England)? I found a possible in Phillips Park but I think that is far away? Cheers! Sally in Yorkshire
Did you try Rusholme road cemetery. I had a relative from Hulme who was buried there. The first link is the list of cemeteries still open and from which year. http://www.manchester.gov.uk/site/scripts/documents_info.php?documentID=1086 The second is a list of churches and it may take a few seconds for the map. Scroll down to the names. If you do some browsing on the Genuki site, you can then find details about the churches e.g. if they had a cemetery. I know this will not lead you directly to buriel details, but it may help you come to some conclusions about possible buriel places. http://www.genuki.org.uk/cgi-bin/churchmap?GR=SJ833965 Pat W ----- Original Message ----- From: Sally Haden To: eng-manchester@rootsweb.com Sent: Wednesday, July 09, 2008 8:29 AM Subject: [ENG-MAN] Cemeteries Hi folks, I have been looking at the site http://www.burialrecords.manchester.gov.uk but it doesn't offer much detail for those who don't know Manchester's geography.
