Hi Mike Well that is definitely him as most of the details match. It seems that many of our family "acquire" a middle name that was not on their birth certificates and sometimes not on their death certificates. We have always presumed that the birth certificate is correct and excluded the middle name if it was not there. This is the case for our William Ward. His death certificate does not show a middle name. We do know that his father's name was Robert Ward and his mother Elizabeth (surname unsure but could be Simpson). As I am not in England, is SKS able to tell me how we can get a birth certificate for this person? Obviously there will be some charge for it and we will have to have it mailed to New Zealand. Thanks in advance. Delwyn As the birth is apparently 1836 there were no Certificates then. Birth registration was not introduced until latter half of 1837 [and even then it was not compulsory until 1872] so the only record would be a baptism from a church, assuming that the family attended a church Terry Heath Cheltenham UK
Hi Terry Yes they definitely attended a church. By the time they came to New Zealand in 1862, William and his family were member of a group known as Disciples of Christ who became Associated Churches of Christ in New Zealand. That church does not believe in baptising children which is why I wonder if William and his younger brother George were baptised at all as children. Siblings older than William were as I can find them in the familysearch Mormon search website. Have always wondered about that one. Thank you very much for your helpful notes about when registration was and was not required. That is very interesting.
