Hi Jan and folks, > I have walked up North Road, Clayton many times in my life. I lived > on the > Ashton Old Road side, Ashton New Road lay behind it. Both start off in > Manchester City Centre, both end up in Ashton Under Lyne. North > Road starts > off in Clayton and finishes in Newton Heath. If you have a number > to look > for I could go and see if the home is still there for you? I would like to find out where number 230 was, approximately, on Ashton New Road, Beswick (or Newton), Ardwick Ward. That's the census address in 1871. Here's a clue. The next page of the census which includes 231 Ashton New Road, has the "Rectory" on it, where lives the Rector of Beswick parish church. Then comes Christ Church School. I have looked on my Godfrey Edition 1891 (Manchester NE) but I am not sure if it is on there or if it is further out of town. And is there a glassworks anywhere nearby? My WALTON family were glassmakers, spread around Manchester. Any suggestions would be most welcome! Sally in Yorkshire >
