    3. Dear Listers, I am new to this list and I'm trying to help a son-in-law research his paternal background. His great grandmother was Ada Winterbottom, nee MacCormac, born c.1884. Birthplace uncertain but believed to be Scotland. She was married to William Edward Winterbottom in 1907 in Salford and had 3 daughters Ada 1909, Lilian 1910 and Doris 1911. She is said to have been the first secretary of the Cooperative Society, a suffragette and the first female magistrate of JP in Salford. His great grandfather was a Henry Clarke a painter and sign writer on the Railway.(officially not doing a Banksie).Harry's wife's name seems to have been forgotten. His son Roy 1908 was a Freemason in the Duke of Lancaster Lodge. He married Doris, the daughter of Ada and William Edward Winterbottom. Can anyone tell me how I may verify any or all of this information? Best wishes, Mary

    3. Hi Mary, Do you have the marriage cert for William and Ada,as this will provide the fathers names for both of them, and also maybe the names witnesses who could be family members, which would be very helpful in finding them on the 1901 census. Have you "found " either of them on any census returns? On the 1901 census there is an entry for an Ada Mc Cormack aged 16 who is a lodger in the house of Caroline Rigby, born Manchester, living in Manchester, and another one living with family in Barrow in Furness occ apprentice milliner There is a birth of a Roy Clarke registered 1908 in Chorlton on freebmd which would give you the name of his mother,if this was where he was born. On the 1911 census the family are living at 20 June St,Regents Rd Salford, but Lillian born 1910 and Doris b1911 are not listed. Hope this helps Gilly ----- Original Message ----- From: "Mary" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, May 23, 2011 6:21 AM Subject: [ENG-MAN] Ada Winterbottom nee MacCormac and Henry(Harry) Clarke > Dear Listers, > > I am new to this list and I'm trying to help a son-in-law research his > paternal background. > > His great grandmother was Ada Winterbottom, nee MacCormac, born c.1884. > Birthplace uncertain but believed to be Scotland. > > She was married to William Edward Winterbottom in 1907 in Salford and had > 3 daughters Ada 1909, Lilian 1910 and Doris 1911.
