The problem is that there is / has been more than one High Street - hence my earlier suggestion to ask the Council. I have fallen down this hole previously with, for example, Gray Street. (There is, for example, a Gray Street today, but it's a mile or two from the now non-existent Gray Street where my ancestors lived.) --- On Sun, 31/7/11, mp.buckley <[email protected]> wrote: High street is off Market street Margaret ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, July 30, 2011 7:59 PM Subject: [ENG-MAN] Location in Manchester > Hello > > If a birth certificate in the 1930s in Manchester says "42 High Street", > registration district Manchester South and sub-district Manchester > Central, > can someone please give me a clue/map reference as to where this could > be, > both then and now? > > Thanks > > Carol > > > > ~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~ > > PLEASE and THANK YOU -- Don't cost a thing and mean so much. > > > ~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~ > > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without > the quotes in the subject and the body of the message ~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~ PLEASE and THANK YOU -- Don't cost a thing and mean so much. ~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~ ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message
Then (if you're trying to locate the exact address) there is the annoying possibility that the house has been re-numbered, even if you are sure of the road - I don't know how common this is, but my own house (in Manchester) had an even number in the deeds when it was built in the 1920s, and the street was then re-numbered (by the Council) during the early 1940s, so that it now has an odd number! So again, the Council would seem to be worth a try.
