Thank you Eric, that was interesting. My chap James HULME was listed as Blacksmith during the 1841 census, an engine driver in an 1849 Baptismal record and 1851 Manchester census. unfortunately he had died before the 1861 census. There were numerous steam engines in use in them days and I wonder if his occupation was in a factory or even a mine. I have a feeling that the early trains had Train drivers not Engine drivers.
