Just to add a little more to the migration situation. Many who emigrated to Australia followed the 'chain migration' principle as Lyn referred to whereby one or two family members (often the younger and single members or young couples with/without small children)who would emigrate and then write back to the family ...usually in glowing terms of the opportunities to be had and then the rest of the family and often extended family would then migrate. This happened in at least 2 cases amongst my ancestors arriving in South Australia during the 1850s. There are many cases especially in South Australia during the 1840s where families had emigrated due to religious issues. So I feel this would very much be the same for those emigrating to the US and Canada both during the Puritan era and later into the 1900s and beyond.
