Hi List I have traced my Travis family back to George Travis who died in 1584 and who left a property in Deansgate to his son George. He was buried in Manchester Cathedral on 9th December 1584. His father John Travis was the first Minister of Blackley Chapel and I think was born in Failsworth By coincidence my cousin's daughter has a fiancee whose surname is Travis and I have trace his family back to Thomas Travis who married a Katherine Hill and he died at Blackley in 1597 and is also buried in Manchester Cathedral. The earliest Thomas Travis I found (Christening 17 AUG 1561 Middleton By Oldham) I feel sure that both our families are probably linked but I just need that piece of the jigsaw to make the connection. Does anyone know what Manchester resources I can access to confirm this. regards Julie

Hi Carla I have had some good suggestions for later, which I will do. Always wise after the event, aren't we? <sigh> Thanks for the suggestion though. I have to admit I'm not very computer savvy but I'm working on it........ Cheers Pauline
An urgent plea to our List leader! A relative who lives in the USA has helped me, over the years, to compile my family tree, but I have found that it has been deleted by an 'expert' who came to clean up my pc. I am, to put it mildly, a bit miffed but I wonder if Gordon West is still on the list and if so, could he please contact me as he may still have my family tree on his pc, in the form of a GEDCOM. I would be very pleased if either our list leader, or Gordon himself could contact me, either through the list or privately. Many thanks Pauline K

Those of you who took an interest in my Cardwell research over the past week or so might be interested to know that I have now found a baptism of a William Cardwell at Manchester Cathedral in 1813. It lists the parents as William and Mary of Salford, and William was a cordwainer, so this seems to prove that there one more than one couple named William and Mary Cardwell baptising children in Manchester between 1795 and 1815. I strongly suspect that this William is a brother of the Ellen Cardwell who was baptised at the Cathedral in 1806 and she is likely to be the one who was living with my Elizabeth in 1841 and 1851. It seems strange that the couple didn't baptise any other children between 1806 and 1813, but I am broadening my spelling variations to try to account for this. Hi, Just another suggestion. I have mine backed up to a thumbnail drive, passport drive and am going to get a bigger external harddrive. I won't keep the external one plugged in all the time to my tower. It will be plugged in only when I am adding something to it. The other small ones I keep put up. I have downloaded not only my gedcom files, but am in the process of scanning all pictures that I have inherited from my mom, aunt and ones that I have taken over the years and putting them on those as well. Hi Joanne: This looks promising and worth some more work. There is a possible matching William on the 1851 census for Salford. He's an iron dresser at a foundry. He's married to Mary. They have these children Susannah, Joseph, Sarah Ann, Thomas and Ellen. Everyone was born in Salford. Susannah was baptised at the Collegiate Church on Easter Sunday 1837 and her father was a mechanic. So her parents (unfortunately) will have been married before Civil Registration began. Even so, I can't find a suitable marriage yet. I think it's likely that this William & Mary married before 1833 as there's a child Margaret baptised at the Collegiate Church to a William & Mary of Salford (Moulder). The family can be tracked through the censuses. I looked in case there was an aged parent living with them but there are no surprises. Just put this family on the pile of evidence and see what else turns up. Best wishes, Irene
I noticed in an 1844 map with Caygill street, Salford that two streets over in a north east direction over Greengate was an Iron Foundry and next to it was a Nortons Court. Hi Joanne, the furthest Murray I have located is my gt gt grandfather James Murray. He was born about 1838, but the earliest record I have for him is his wedding certificate in 1859.(I have him on the 1861 and 1871 census, and his death certificate.) If I recall correctly-I began this around 15 years ago and had a break(!) the reasons for my struggle to find him before 1859- I applied for a couple of birth certificates for around 1838, but received a letter stating that the name of the father was wrong. (From his wedding certificate his father's name was John Murray, a weaver.) Next, with him getting married in 1859, I tried the 1861 census. I found him now living with his wife and two young children at a different address to where he was living two years previous on his wedding certificate. So I thought if I found this address it may be his parents home. It was 45 Angel Street, which I think was a lodging house. So without knowing his mothers name I am struggling to find/prove between 1838 and 1859,a James Murray, born in Manchester around 1838, son of John Murray, weaver, Andy On Thu, Feb 21, 2013 at 6:25 AM, Joanne Humphrey <joanne1humphrey@gmail.com>wrote: > Hi Andy > > I am also researching Murray ancestors in Manchester, but there are so many > of them and mine don't have unusual forenames so what I know is a bit > sparse. > > They came from Londonderry in the 1850s and consisted of Catherine, b about > 1803 and her children Susan, Margaret, Catherine, James and William. Hi Irene I agree that something just doesn't feel right about Elizabeth and the family of William and Mary, but I'll keep plugging away and see what I can make certain. I always feel a little bereft when I have to let a family go, but I must remind myself that if I do find that this family isn't mine, I'd never even heard of them a week ago so I can get over it! In 1841 age should have been rounded down to the nearest 5 years. It looks as if Elizabeth may have rounded her age up - if the age of 38 is anywhere near correct in 1851. I think you might have to step back from the children of William & Mary. BTW, William's occupation is given on his marriage entry. It says, smith - consistent with later entries of blacksmith at the baptisms of the children. But so far, there's been nothing that would really convince me that you have the correct parentage for your Elizabeth. It's still possible but it doesn't feel right yet. Keep working at it - you may get there eventually. Best wishes, Irene :-~:-~:-~:-~:-~:-~:-~:-~:-~:-~: Except for personal messages, please post replies to the list. Other people can learn from them! Hi Irene I looked up the 1845 marriage for Ellener, hoping that her age would be given and I could cross-match her with the one from the 1841 census - she would have stood out as a more than 35-year-old marrying at that time, but unfortunately, the MC just says she was of full age. However, Joseph appears in 1851 where he is a widow, aged 46. He was therefore 40 when he married so there is a likelihood that Ellener was an older bride as well which is promising. I haven't been able to find Ellener's death registered as yet, but if I do I may order a copy as that will give me her exact age. I suspect Bispham is a name which was often mis-spelled! The names of the two witnesses are not familiar to me yet. I think I will spend my evening building as full a tree as I can of William and Mary's family and try to get my head around what else I can do to make links.
