    1. [ENG-MAN] LORD families of Manchester area
    2. Len Heyward
    3. Hello List; I am trying to find any connections with my Samuel LORD family of Radcliffe, Manchester. This has now become one of my brick walls. The following is obtained from the 1851 census. Samuel LORD, born about 1814 in Radcliffe, married in Nov 1835 Alice LOMAX, born about 1815 in Little Lever. They had numerous children, Elizabeth c1836, Robert 1838, Peter 1840, Mary Annie 1843, Henry 1845, Alice 1848, James 1850, Emilia or Emma 1852, Sarah 1855, Samuel 1856, Robert 1860. Also looking for connections with the Henery or Henry LORD family of Oldham, Manchester. I believe they may be related to the family above - the same first names getting used in both families. Henery LORD, born in 1821 in Oldham, married in 1840 in Oldham Sarah or Sally HOWARD, born in 1818 in Lancashire. They also had a large family, William M. c1841, John ?, Edward 1847, Hannah 1848, James 1849, Susanna 1852, Henry ? This second family emigrated to Victoria, Australia in 1855. I have been unable to get back beyond the two LORD families above. Any information gratefully received. Regards Len Heyward

    1. [ENG-MAN] Lomas Buildings, Manchester. Boffey, Buffey or Boughfey.
    2. Graham Price
    3. Hello all you clever Manchester researchers, here's one for you. My Samuel Boffey (various versions, even Befey - father Samuel Boffey, mother Phebe Linney) and his wife Ann Dale married at Manchester Cathedral 1795 and managed to produce 10 children. Samuel & Ann moved to Oswestry, Shropshire, where Samuel became a builder and inn keeper and ended up a gentleman if you please. Up to recent times I had managed to find all his children's baptisms at Manchester Cathedral and the continuing family history of four of the children, particular Sarah b. 1795 from whom I am descended. The other six children left me a puzzle, no marriages etc., until the Lancashire OPC came up with most of them dying less than one year old 1801-1806. Diseases? Apart from the four in Oswestry, two others in Manchester lived on, one son to 1822 and Hannah to 1814, the entry of burial reads "Abode Lomas's Buildings." I'm just wondering what my Samuel was doing there at the time, because originally he was shown to have been a weaver. Most of the deceased children were buried from St. Thomas, Ardwick. Perhaps the family moved from Ardwick (not exactly sure of its location at this time, but suppose I should look at some maps) back into central Manchester? Anyway, see this url. Is this the Lomas Buildings as mentioned, I wonder. The family had moved to Oswestry by 1828 as noted by the death of daughter Emma born 1812. http://manchesterhistory.net/manchester/tours/tour4/area4page67.html Any advice or info re. this little puzzle gratefully received. Best wishes to all Graham Melbourne Oz

    3. I have been googling Mobberley and low and behold it gives a lot of information on some of the names you are searcing for. There is also mention on the University of Manchester, and Shropshire and Alderley Edge. and Brierley. Good luck, it is probably just in the spelling. Regards, Barbara in New Zealand. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Trevor Armstrong" <trevorarmstrong@iinet.net.au> To: <eng-manchester@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, February 28, 2013 11:42 PM Subject: [ENG-MAN] Mopley Hall, County of Chester? Sally, I too may have been guilty of not "snipping" my recent posting, so I am sending it again. I hope I can be forgiven. Some little while ago I sought the assistance of the group with regard to the baptismal details of Sir Oswald Brierly (1817-1894), who was Marine Artist to Queen Victoria. I received some very helpful advice. Brierly says, in his writings, that he was entitled to armorial bearings and this was confirmed in Burkes' "General Amory of England ….", which refers to "Brierly of Mopley Hall Co of Chester". The description of the crest in Burke is exactly that used by Brierly in all his correspondence. My problem is that I cannot find any reference to either "Mopley Hall" or indeed a place called Mopley in the County of Chester. There was an ancient church of All Saints in Chester, which was rebuilt in the 19th century and is now the secular Guildhall in Watergate Street, Chester. It has some tenuous connection with the name "Mopley" I was hoping someone with "local knowledge" might be able to give me a pointer in the right direction. I couldn't find anything listed under 'Mopley Hall Cheshire' other than the book you refer to.
