    3. Hi Joanne, Ok, further info sent off-list: I have now found Gracious Street, which runs N-South just west of Denton's Green, a touch west of St Helens. Green lane lies slightly to the South and East of Denton's Green. Kiln Lane runs roughly East-West of Denton's Green, and intersects with runs into Bleak Hill Lane. Use Google Maps to locate "Dentons Green, Lancashire, UK". Best Wishes, Peter in Sydney On 13 April 2013 19:31, Joanne Humphrey <joanne1humphrey@gmail.com> wrote: > Thank you. 3. Hi Peter Thank you for this resource. I wasn't aware of its existence before. None of the roads on the list looks like the street which is written on the death certificate, so maybe his street was newly created after the census. 1. [ENG-MAN] Preston's Inns, Taverns and Beerhouses
    2. Lynne
    3. Steve Halliwell has created a very interesting website, Preston's Inns, Taverns and Beerhouses, which can be viewed at http://pubsinpreston.blogspot.co.uk Says Steve: "This website is the product of a project that was born in about the year 2000. The original plan was, from an entirely logistical perspective, to limit the research to the boundaries of the old Preston borough, and to restrict the research to the period prior to 1900. I determined to identify all the hotels, inns, taverns and beer-houses that had existed in the area. The remit (to myself) was to establish exactly where each premises were situated, to trace a photograph or other image of each of the premises, and to gather together anecdotal material relative to them. "The exercise quickly moved on to the inclusion of the names of those who ran them and when, together with details of the relevant Census returns. The recent availability of on-line newspaper search facilities has enlarged the availability of anecdotal evidence and material immensely. "All in all, what began as a modest project, has turned into quite a success, with all the information gleaned available on the website, that has attracted nearly 120,000 page views in just 12 months. Additional material has been received, generally from descendants of those mentioned on the website. Those descendants are now scattered worldwide, and have been extremely generous in sharing their family's past with me - information that can only come from the family. "The project has now moved on to include the period beyond 1900, and is still very much a work in progress. Any contributions will be welcome, with due credit given as to where the information came from. "I do hope you enjoy reading about a part of Preston's social past, and I hope that it encourages others to undertake a similar exercise in their own areas." My apologies to Steve for taking so very long in passing this information along to all of you. Lynne

    1. [ENG-MAN] The Next Meeting of The Blo(o)r(e) Society
    2. Lynne
    3. Forwarded on behalf of Dr Ian K Bloor: The Next Meeting of The Blo(o)r(e) Society The next Open Meeting of The Blo(o)r(e) Society is to be held on Saturday, May 4th, 2013, at The Church Hall of St Mark's, next to 211, Basford Park Road, Basford, Stoke-on-Trent, ST5 0PG. Anyone interested in Blo(o)r(e) Family History will be Welcome. Members of the Committee, and other stalwarts of the Society will be there, ready to help visitors, from about 10am until about 5pm. We'll be bringing a wide variety of research tools, and we will be happy to use our expertise to help you to start, to re-start, or to continue your own exploration of your Blo(o)r(e) Family History. As an added incentive, there will be Tea, Coffee, Juice and biscuits to help your concentration, and we can keep children amused too. It may be worth mentioning that you don't have to be called Blo(o)r(e) to get through the door. In fact, less than half of our members are called Blo(o)r(e), and at least four of them don't seem to have any Blo(o)r(e)s in their Family Trees. If you would like to know more, contact Ian Bloor on 01270 811 260 or visit www.bloor.org The Blo(o)r(e) Society sprang into life in 1996, as a One-Name genealogical research group looking into the origins of Bloors, Bloores and Blores in North Staffordshire. We fairly quickly realised that some Blewers and Blowers were also part of the 'clan', and we're aware of at least one family who are listed as Bloors in censuses in Stoke-on-Trent, but became Blewers after they moved to Birmingham, and eventually appear as Bluers in censuses in Scotland. We had our first meeting at the Epworth Street Methodist Church, in Stoke, and we've had Open Meetings every year since then, mostly in and around Stoke-on-Trent, but occasionally further afield: but not much further afield, because 50% of the Blo(o)r(e)s in Britain, live within 50 miles of Stoke Station. The other 50% are spread all over the surface of the Earth, and we have links with Blo(o)r(e) descendants on every continent except Antarctica. We've spent that last 17 years gathering information about Blo(o)r(e) ancestors from the 334 Blo(o)r(e) descendants who have joined the Society, and from about the same number who haven't joined. Most of this information has been checked, and re-checked, and sifted and sorted by our team of expert family historians, and now forms the basis for our collection of more than 80 separate Blo(o)r(e) family trees. A few of these trees go back into the 17th Century, more back into the 18th Century, and the rest back into the 19th Century. Our task now is to try to link these trees together, to try to identify the true earliest known ancestors of each group, while we keep gathering more information, and fitting living Blo(o)r(e) descendants into existing trees or, which is even more exciting, discovering Blo(o)r(e)s who belong to a currently unknown Blo(o)r(e) tree. The technique that is allowing us to establish probably links between our trees is the use of DNA analysis. Y-chromosome DNA is passed down, basically unchanged, from father to son, and so on, which means that, apart from random, small changes that occur from time to time, I have the same Y-chromosome 'signature' as my father, his father, his father, his father, and so on back for a long, long time. My brothers (should) have the same DNA signature, and my male cousins should have the same signature. In fact any male descended from my earliest known ancestor should have the same DNA as my father gave to me. Using DNA samples from males from some of our Blo(o)r(e) trees, we have been able to identify several groups of trees where the Y-chromosome DNA is very similar, or actually identical, meaning that thr trees in each group are highly likely to have a single common ancestor – although this ancestor may have lived several hundred years ago, perhaps even before there are any records to identify exactly who he was. Nevertheless, this is what we are trying to do. One of the consequences of all our research, is that we discover interesting facts about interesting Blo(o)r(e)s, some of them famous, or infamous for one reason or another, but many interesting simply because they have left records of their 'normal', 'hum-drum', 'everyday' lives, in the form of letters, photographs or notebooks that have survived all the 'rubbish disposal', clearing up after funerals, and house-moves that so often mean that family 'gems' are lost for ever. One of our objectives, as a Society, is "to chronicle the lives of every Blo(o)r(e) that has ever lived"- a task that I can only imagine being completed in the distant future. But we have made a start. If you know someone who has a Blo(o)r(e) in their tree – please tell them about the Meeting.

    3. Thank you Liane and Peter for your help. George was working as an ag lab or labourer at the time of his death so I suppose it is possible that he was living in a rather remote part of the town. I'll have a look at the inhabitants in 1851 and see if I can make any connections. 3. Hi Anne Thank you very much for this. As I said in my email to Jordan, I have been searching for this marriage for many years and had only really focused my search on the St Helens area. I still don’t know how I could possibly have missed it on Family Search. The Howard family was in Eccleston for many decades before this marriage and I have seen gravestones which confirm this, so it is likely the Rimmers who were from Liverpool. This certainly gives me a new line of enquiry for parents of George. Best regards Joanne :-~:-~:-~:-~:-~:-~:-~:-~:-~:-~: Except for personal messages, please post replies to the list. 1. [ENG-MAN] Gracious Street, Eccleston
    2. Joanne Humphrey
    3. I believe I have the death certificate of my 3 x great grandfather George Rimmer in Eccleston, Prescot in 1846. This man has proved extremely elusive and I have been trying to look up the address at which he died in 1841 or 1851, but Find My Past doesn't seem to have a listing for Gracious Street. The writing is pretty clear, and in any case I have done some wildcard searches and can't find anything like Gracious Street. Does anyone know this area well and if so, can you please suggest where this address might be? George and his family were in Eccleston in 1841 but the address is no more specific than that. Sadly, the marriage of George and his wife, Susannah Howard, has escaped me and they don't seem to have registered any of their children's births, so all I have pertaining to George is a handful of christenings and the fact that his widowed mother, Isabella appears to be with him in 1841. Many thanks Joanne

    1. Re: [ENG-MAN] Gracious Street, Eccleston
    2. lfenimore
    3. There is a 'Gracouse' St. in Eccleston in 1851. But only one residence on the street. And the street right before it is Green Lane. After it is Chapel Coatags/Cottages and the parsonage. These are listed under 'other establishments, Prescot' at the beginning of the street listing. If I put it in Gracouse a street name it doesn't come up, so just use Eccleston in 'residential place' box, nothing else filled in, and you get a list of all the streets. Don't see it in 1841. Liane

    1. [ENG-MAN] Lancs OPC important updates - 11 Apr 2013
    2. sally roberts
    3. Morning all, Paul Dixon, from the marvellous Lancashire OPC, has sent me an update to changes that have been made to the search engine facility on the website: "I have introduced two new features to Search, "Exact Name Match" and "Search Churches in radius". Previously, entering a name would produce all matches to that name and variants. First you may have noticed that the range of names that create a match has been extended, so now it should be possible to get a match from most of the spellings that occur in the registers. Having got a match with all variants displayed, placing a tick in the exact match box should cause it to return only those entries where the spelling matches that entered in the search form. The radius search is a little more flexible than whole parish or county, it allows you to match all entries at establishments within a given radius of the selected church. This does require a church to be selected to give the centre point on which that radius is based. It will not work on whole parish or whole county as there is no reference point for that radius. Enter a whole number and select for either miles or kilometres. It will not accept distances above 90 miles or 150 km."  These excellent new features are already in operation for records that were last loaded onto the site - so any searches made by the engine will return results from all the databases that are available on the system. Many thanks, Paul! Here are the latest registers to be added to the site: http://www.lan-opc.org.uk/indexw.html 10 April 2013 Baptisms 1887 to 1891, Banns 1833 to 1841 and Marriages 1921 to 1956 from the Church of St Peter in the Parish of Burnley This completes the Register of Baptisms for 1885 to 1891 Baptisms 1879 to 1893 from the Church of St John the Baptist, in the Parish of Burnley Banns 1922 to 1932 from the Church of St Stephen in the Parish of Burnley Marriages 1661 to 1694 from the Parish of Cockerham Baptisms 1872 to 1879 from St Thomas, Eccleston, in the Parish of St Helens Burials 1904 to 2012 from Wheatley Lane Inghamite, in the Parish of Fence in Pendle Marriages 1870 to 1875 from the Church of the Holy Trinity in the Parish of Habergham Eaves Baptisms 1842 to 1873 and Banns 1799 to 1812 from the Church of St Mary, in the district of Hale, Liverpool Graves 1849 to 1993 from the Independent Chapel, Little Lever Baptisms 1860 to 1861, 1863 to 1864 and 1865 to 1866 and Marriages 1818 to 1821 from the Church of St Peter, Liverpool Baptisms 1903 to 1914 from St Ignatius, Ordsall Baptisms 1858 to 1872 from the Church of St George, Pendleton Marriages 1919 to 1930 from Christ Church, Salford Baptisms 1927 to 1932 from the Church of St John the Baptist, Toxteth, Liverpool Baptisms 1830 to 1832 from the Roman Catholic Church of St Patrick, Toxteth, Liverpool Baptisms 1907 to 1914 from the Church of St James the Great, Waterfoot in Rossendale Baptisms 1891 to 1901 from the Church of St Jude the Apostle, West Derby, Liverpool Baptisms 18903 to 1915 from the Church of All Saints, Weaste Baptisms 1896 to 1903 from the Church of St Luke, Weaste 3 April 2013 Marriages 1845 to 1900 from Church of the Holy Trinity in the Parish of Ashton in Makerfield Regards, Sally

    3. Hi,                I have unlimited long distance so I place a call to the Salt Lake, Utah Library. The reasoning behind the access only at a Family History center is apparently due to the restrictions that the owner of those records put on them. Therefore it is probably the National Archives (who probably owns the original records) that placed the restrictions. I have to sometimes log on the to the Family History site to view some records. Registrations if free. Well I hope this helps.   Carla --- On Thu, 4/4/13, Lynne <lklein@mindspring.com> wrote: From: Lynne <lklein@mindspring.com> Subject: Re: [ENG-MAN] FamilySearch UK WWI Service Records, 1914-1920, Collection To: eng-manchester@rootsweb.com Date: Thursday, April 4, 2013, 7:27 AM Hi Derek It appears that the images can only be viewed at a Family History Centre at this time.  Keep your fingers crossed that once the records are indexed we'll be able to view them on our home PCs. Another subscriber has emailed FamilySearch to ask about this and as soon as she receives an answer I'll let you know.
