    3. Hi Carol, Just a word of warning.. If you go for a Free trial period, you still have to put details of your credit card etc. before you can search. That is fine, but please be sure to cancel out a couple of days before the free trial is over, or you will find they will debit your account with a payment before you know it. Also if you try an LDS Family History centre you will get more direct help. 3. Thanks to Both Erics, Glynis, Jan and Louise. I went to the library this morning to see how both worked but I didn't have a very successful morning as the librarian was busy with other people when I could have done with help. I found some census on Ancestry but there was problem printing them, I will have to enlarge them on my printer. Seems there is a problem with it. The librarian said I could print them out on FMP but couldn't find them to print!! So this weekend I am going to have a free trial period with both. Its not easy teaching an old dog new tricks. I could cope with Family Search as it used to be and free BMD and even Lancashire and Cheshire Free BMD as they were all straight forward. Any way thanks again for all your suggestions. Carol

    3. I use Family Tree Maker and for me the huge advantage of Ancestry is that with one click I can get a list of all the relevant census etc references for any name on my FTM tree or, with a few more clicks, even any name that I care to enter . Eric Millward

I would be glad of some of your opinions on good sites. Best wishes to you all Carol <snip> HI Carol As others have said, both of the sites are useful, but different; it all depends on what you want and what you are looking for. At the moment I use ancestry more because they have some useful (for me) Parish records before the 1837 introduction of state BMD registrations. But 'find my past' had some census records that ancestry didn't. I find FreeBMD the best (and free) for Births, Marriages and Deaths post 1837. When I was having problems finding one of my ancestors and contacted the group, someone found him on 'Family Search'; his name had been mis-spelt in a variation that the other two sites had missed. My husband used 'Family Search' a lot before they re-vamped it; apparently you can still get to the old Wallace front end, but I'm not sure how, as I've never used it. Ancestry's search engine is very broad and unfathomable at times, and fmp's is very exact! Both ancestry and fmp do free trials - why not sign up for a trial and see which is most useful? Glynis

    3. Hi Carol, I use all those sources and find, they are all different, the way they work and what records they have to search. You just have to figure out which holds the most that you are interested in. The way they work is just a matter of trial and error and practise. If you're concerned about subscriptions, the familysearch is free no matter where you are. Ancestry and FMP access are available free at any Public library or LDS Family History Centre. Check out their data bases and pick whatever suits you. If you're putting your own tree on there, I find Ancestry the easiest. Hope this has been of some help to you. 3. I have both, I do everything on Ancestry, I just use Genes for searching for peoples trees who don't have an ancestry account really. I don't like Genes as you have to ask everyone to view their tree, whereas on Ancestry I can quickly see if someone's tree is what I am looking for or not. I also love Ancestry call centre staff, always gin the extra mile for me.
