    1. [ENG-MAN] William WATTS in Newton 1706

    3. A big 'thank you' to those who responded to my request re the register entries. I can definitely move on with this family. Result! What I really need now is a map and description of Newton Heath and Failsworth at that time (mid 1700s). I understand from what I've been able to find on the web that they were both relatively small townships - outlying rural villages really - and that it may have been a silk-weaving area. I tried contacting Manchester RO yesterday but got trapped in a convoluted telephone messaging system they have, so will try again today. Any pointers re literature gratefully received. Ruth

    3. Hi Ruth, I see no reference to Silk manufacturing in Newton Heath in the 1700's. The industry seems to be cotton weaving. I would assume it was the Cotton industry that he pursued not silk. He was a Weaver....... 3. These are register entries I have from Family Search and there may be more re this family that I haven't yet found. Marriage: 12 Aug 1760 William WATTS = Nancy MILLER [Manchester Cathedral] Baptism: 16 Aug 1761 William son of William & Nancy WATTS of Newton Heath [?All Saints] Baptism: 26 Feb 1764 Ralph son of William & Nancy WATTS of Newton Please would SKS with access to the original documents for the entries above send me a transcription of the wording that is actually on the record. None appears yet on Lancs OPC. Or please tell me where I can obtain photocopies - presumably from microfiche. I expect the answer may be the Manchester Record Office, Marshall St, or the Local Studies Centre in St Peter's Library if it is now functioning again. I'm hopelessly out of touch. My final question: Newton Heath is an area new to me in my researches. I've found very little on the web so far re this area in the mid-1700s - Victoria County Histories, Genuki, Google Books, etc. I would welcome any suggestions guiding me to local publications/websites. Why would a young man from East Cheshire be drawn to Newton Heath at that particular time? Is there a special reason that I should know about? I suspect an apprenticeship. Thanks for any help. Ruth

    3. I would like to thank Elaine, Joanne, Peter and Mike for their replies . I found the workhouse site that Joanne mentioned very interesting. It was nice to know that by 1951 when Joseph died aged 88 it was not a workhouse or an asylum but a hospital. He was suffering from a long list of ailments on his death certificate. Going through my records I found that one of Joseph's daughters died there aged 69 in 1968 of cancer and that one of my husband's sister was born and died there in 1942. Thanks again I will keep looking for more information about Joseph and his "cycle shop" in the front room of his house on Moston Lane. Carol

At the moment I am interested in finding out how to find electoral roles in Manchester circa 1944-1945. I have been given a letter written by a young London girl who was sent to Manchester during the war. It was sent from 11 CURZON STREET in the VICTORIA PARK are of Manchester. I am trying to find out who she stayed with, as she mentions my aunt in the letter but I am not positive that it was my aunt she was staying with. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Anne
