Hi. I have been researching my great grandfather CHARLES WILLIAM COLEMAN B 1861 in Natal SA. (No record of birth or christening has been found in South Africa) He was publican in the 1911 census at the Masons Arms. My grandmother was born at 19 Jacksons row manchester. In 1906. I have been unable to find any details of his father CHARLES WILLIAM COLEMAN SNR or mother (name unknown). Except for his name on a marriage certificate of his son CHARLES . I believe the family may have been publicans in the area or in wales. Does anyone know of a way to find any details of history of pubs in the area and their managers. I have not been able to find anything on any sites. Regards Karen

The subject and speaker for the next Bolton Family History meeting has been changed: The new speaker will be Brooke Foss Westcott, a descendant of Brooke Foss Westcott (12 January 1825 – 27 July 1901) who was a British bishop, Biblical scholar and theologian. Brooke has a particular interest in historical legal documents and his subject "A 300 year old Brick Wall", describes his family's 100 year long journey to find the origins of Foss. Hopefully he has some research hints. We also have Terry Walsh our Genealogical bookman bringing a selection of his wares for sale. All welcome, and the doors will open at 7pm for preparation and a 7.30pm start. Enquiries as usual to Barbara Owen Secretary on 01204309515. A Help Desk will be available afterwards.

I don't know if any of your members can help me, but I am looking for a speaker for the 15th September (a Sunday afternoon) who has some knowledge of wills and probate. It is a subject we have not covered before but our own members have shown interest and I wondered if there is anyone locally who might be able to come and help us out. I realise that it is short notice but thought it was worth a try. Thanks in anticipation of putting this message on your discussion group. Hello Jim, Maybe your grandfather found some subsequent way of repaying the debts which had forced him into bankruptcy. He could then be ‘discharged’ from the bankruptcy order which prevented further trading. My grandfather was not able to do this and died in 1943 as an ‘undischarged’ bankrupt. Think the rules are quite different now, or maybe people ignore them. Hope this helps. Kath Prince
