    3. Hi List, new to this list and looking for Gervase and James Wrench. I know Gervase married in Manchester Catherdral in1851 to Sarah Armstrong and was in various census and directories as a baker/provision merchant/shopkeeper ect. My question is does anyone know if he was of the same family as James Wrench of Manchester. Also described as baker/shopkeeper etc. on census and directory. Gervase Wrench born Cheshire 1811/12 James Wrench born Manchester? 1806 What I really am trying to find is the father of James wife Mary Bevington born Stoke area 1806. I have tried every approach I can think of and am now clutching at straws !!! 1. [ENG-MAN] Walton family of Lancashire, glassmakers
    2. Sally Haden
    3. Hello folks, As suggested by someone here, I am listing the streets associated with the WALTON family when they were living and manufacturing glass in the Hulme area 1861-1871. It would be terrific if anyone can find any of these for me? Or send me clips of maps of the date? I think they are all Hulme, but might spill over into Chorlton or Ancoats areas. Clopton Street, house no. 85 (Hulme Sub-reg. district of Chorlton District, St George's Municipal. Ward) Rutland Street, house no 31 (Hulme Sub-Reg. District of Chorlton, St. George's Municipal Ward) Stafford Street, house no. 12 (St George's Municipal Ward) Brookside, Hulme, house no. 12 (St. George's Ward) City Road, Hulme, house no. 43 (Medlock Municipal Ward, Hulme Sub-Reg. District of Chorlton District) River Road, house no. 4 (Hulme, Hulme Sub-Reg. District of Chorlton District) Welcom Street., house no. 66 (Medlock Municipal Ward) Glass Street, which should be off Medlock Street. There should be a glassworks there. *********************** Finally, in Salford in 1881: Craven Street, house number 63. (Regent Rd. sub-reg. district of Salford District) *********************** Thank you so much! I have been scrunching up my eyes on online maps today but only found City Road and even that may have been different by the quite late date of the map. BTW thanks for the link to that great online resource of maps of Lancashire. Thanks to that I have got further along with a search for an early glassmaking site in Liverpool. Sally in Yorkshire

    2. Sally Haden
    3. Hello folks, I am much obliged to Kath and Heather for their help. The website http://www.historicaldirectories.org/hd/ is a huge boost, and already I have found the name of a glass manufacturing family in Liverpool in 1828-29 which I think the WALTONs married into, so that is terrific. What about websites for Victorian street maps of Hulme/Salford, please? I need these in order to identify the several addresses I have for the Waltons. Modern maps are no good of course.... because it was all bombed out in the War? The closest I have come yet is Vision of Britain web pages, but the image of early Manchester is way too fuzzy. I would much appreciate any links for maps. While I am here I would like to recommend Steven Dowd's excellent site http://www.n-le-w.co.uk/ all about Newton-le-Willows and Earlestown for anyone who wants to research in that area just west of Manchester. I know it is out of the bounds of this list but someone might find it useful. It has some terrific maps. Sally in East Yorkshire

    3. Hi Sally Have you explored http://www.historicaldirectories.org/hd/ ? From experience, I start with selecting an area Then sort the list by decade Once you open a suitable directory, then search for (in your case) GLASS Hope this helps Heather PS If you find that it isn't loading properly - try again later. The site is no longer actively maintained and sometimes it "falls over". Usually someone mends it but it can take an hour or so. 1. [ENG-MAN] WALTON family of Lancashire, glass manufacturers
    2. Sally Haden
    3. Hi Folks I am new to this list, although not new to the subject of Victorian Manchester. I am writing a book about some Victorian glassmakers who went from Britain to Japan c. 1873 to c. 1885, including my Scottish great grandfather. They went at the request of the Japanese government to help Japan establish its first Western-style glassworks. The first one was Thomas WALTON Jnr. He came from a large family of glassmakers and glass manufacturers by the name of WALTON, who had congregated in Lancashire from the late 1860s onwards. Originating in Stourbridge, they had been working and living in various parts of the country since about 1825. In Lancashire where they settled, they became heavily involved in pressed glass manufacture. As far as I can see, a major interest for them was Hulme. I have a few questions I would like to put to you, but just for now I need to ground the genealogy with reference to some Victorian-period street maps of Hulme. Okay, I know about the Godfrey Series but I don't want to spend money on those just yet. Are there some free online resources please? I know some local authorities put good maps online for free. Secondly for now, can anyone help me with directories? I don't need any census look-ups thanks. It is glass companies that I want, in trade entries. I am particularly interested to find any trade entries for Samuel WALTON, who may have either had his own small glass works, or more likely he was a manager perhaps working for the Derbyshire glassworks which were at first in City Road, Hulme (possibly known as "Bridgewater Flint Glassworks") and later at the "Regent Flint Glass Works", Regent Road, Salford. * 1861 Census, Samuel Walton is living 85 Clopton Street, Hulme and says he is a glass manufacturer * 1871 Census, Samuel Walton is living at 43 City Road, Hulme and says he is a glass manufacturer employing 24 men and 20 boys. Later I will visit the archives in Manchester. Should anyone come up with information about the Walton-owned glassworks which they had in Bolton and Newton-le-Willows, that would be welcome too, but I do have those fairly well covered. It is the Hulme area which I know little about. Many thanks! 3. Hi Ruth, I had a look at the IGI entry you mentioned, and you can see at the bottom of the entry, on all three entries they are submission by a patron. So there can always be mistakes there. On the LDS Library Catalogue, there are several Parish reg. on film for Eccles, but I didn't see St.Mary's. You could check there, just in case I missed it. If you do find one, or any others of interest, you can attend any LDS Family History centre and order the film in, then read at your leisure [they give you a month] when it comes in.Costs 5dollars in Australia to do this. You can also get a photocopy of any entry relevant. Also If there is a source no: on the bottom of the IGI entry, you could find out who put in the submission by ordering that film.If there is a batch no:[double click and it will come up in the IGI search engine] you can find out what else they put in at the same time. 1. [ENG-MAN] CROFT and IGI corrections
    2. Thank you very much Jan, Adrian, David and Winifred for all the helpful advice. I've been playing for about an hour now!! Just to clarify - I do have a photocopy of the marriage of Benjamin CROFT and Sarah BRIDGFORD registered in the Eccles PRs which have been filmed, and copies of which are held in Salford Local History Library. This marriage was confirmed by the archivist at the Central Library, St. Peter's Manchester, who checked the microfilmed copies of the BTs. This is as close as one can get to the original documents. So I'm pretty sure of the information if only IGI could be persuaded to accept it. Jan, I checked the three batch numbers and found one of them had a long list of entries of CROFTs born and married in Eccles at that time. So I need to take a trip up North to Manchester to search the filmed PRs and BTs myself. Although its a fair distance it's not as far as Australia! And I can look forward to a couple of days away... Thanks again. Ruth
