I have a name list of people who lived in Fennel street from 1581 to 1851. What was the name of the person you are researching?. Fennel street was close to Hanging Ditch and Long Millgate. These were very old areas in Manchester. Fennel street was on the east side of the Manchester cathedral. To the north a short walking distance was the area known as Cheetwood. Cheetwood was north of Strangeways Prison. Cheetwood lane was in Cheetwood. I have saved the Fennel street map section dated 1844. But dont know who was asking about this street. So please contact me. Hello fellow listers Does anyone know where to find a list of those buried in this cemetery? I believe there might be a Robert WARD buried there. I am not sure if he is ours, but every one of our WARD families seems to have a Robert in it. Appreciate any help anyone may be able to give. Our WARD families come from Moston, Manchester as far back as we can go so far, and were in the cotton industry. Hi Val, Do you know anything more about your Thomas William TAYLOR? My TAYLOR family lived in Ancoats, which I believe are very near Beswick and Ardwick. I have: John Thomas TAYLOR b. 1858 (my ancestor) His brother William TAYLOR b. 1856, and his wife Frances/Fanny had 9 children between 1877 and 1891, when they lived on Neild St. Kathryn Courtney -----Original Message----- From: eng-manchester-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:eng-manchester-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of alicia.taylor1@ntlworld.com Sent: Saturday, July 05, 2008 8:59 AM To: eng-manchester@rootsweb.com Subject: [ENG-MAN] new member - researching TAYLOR, McGEE, GOODIER,TORKINGTON Hi My name is Val Taylor and I just joined this list. As a quick introduction I'm researching the following names in Manchester: TAYLOR - Gorton and Beswick. McGEE - Gorton, Beswick, Ardwick. GOODIER - Didsbury, Chorlton on Medlock, Withington, Burnage. TORKINGTON - Chorlton on Medlock. All of these names with the exception of TORKINGTON are my direct lines. William Torkington married Mary Goodier in 1876 in Stockport. They lived in Chorlton on Medlock. I believe he died before 1901 as I found Mary on the 1901 census, in Chorlton on Medlock, married to someone else. I suspect he was in the services but I haven't explored this yet. I have searched for a death in this country for him but not found one that's correct yet. My grandfather was born in Beswick, moved at some point in his youth to Gorton. The family lived at Bulkeley Street when it was first built. he died in Marple, Cheshire. Born 1907, died 1973. My dad was born in Gorton - Bulkeley Street in 1929 and died 3 years ago. My great grandmother was Clara McGEE and married my great grandfather Thomas William TAYLOR in 1906, in Manchester. Both are buried in Gorton Cemetery. She came from Nottingham but my great great grandfather, HENRY McGEE came to Manchester working as a bricklayer and stayed. Family lore has it that he worked on the Midland Hotel and also London Road Fire Station. Clara is my inspiration for starting the family history research which has now become all consuming! I'm particularly eager to find any living family connected to either of these two lines. The GOODIER families were farmers, mostly in Didsbury. These are my maternal lines. My maternal great grandmother is Elizabeth Alice GOODIER. She was born in Gatley, Cheshire in 1867 and died in Hazel Grove, Cheshire in 1916. She was married twice - Robert KITCHEN and then PHILIP HOOLEY. I'm descended from the HOOLEY line (that's my maternal grandma's maiden name). Elizabeth Alice's father is Thomas GOODIER, BORN 1834, Didsbury. His wife is Elizabeth JOHNSON born abt. 1838, Salford. Thomas' parents are Thomas GOODIER and JEMIMA KELSALL. They married in 1823 at St. James parish church, Didsbury. They had 10 children in all and some of those that survived moved to various parts of Manchester and Salford and in my great great grandfather's case, Gatley. I hope I haven't included too much information here! I got carried away! But at least if you made it this far, you know my interests in the Manchester area. I'd love to hear from anyone who thinks they may be connected. This has been a lone path for me to date as I haven't found anyone researching the same families and I'd love to share information and stories. Otherwise, I'll sit back and enjoy reading of other listers tales. Val Taylor ~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~ Except for personal messages, please post replies to the list. For anyone like me who didn't know - Manchester Archives Catalogue is now available to search on-line. I have discovered the names of all the schools in Manchester that have closed and am absolutely shocked at how many there were! Is it possible that Cheetwood was a district? I have someone listed in Pigot's 1841 with what appear to be 2 entries, one just under 'Cheetwood' and one with what is obviously a home address at Fennel St. He was a cordwainer and might have had the business and the home at separate locations. He subsequently moved to Cheetwood Lane if that helps you to identify the area Kath
I am interested the Page family who ran a shop in 264 Stretford Road /25 Drake Street for a number of years. My gg grandfather was Charles Horace Page and he ran the shop with his wife Mirriam. They had ten children. They lived and worked in the area from the 1880's. Charles committed suicide in 1911 - the business was not as profitable as previously. I have some information on most of the children but hardly anything on James Page born in Hulme, 1877. Any information about the family would be appreciated.
