    1. [ENG-MAN] Horrocks
    2. Hi everybody. It's a long time since I did any family history in the Manchester area but have found my way back. I tried to find my GG Grandfather, George Hunter HORROCKS on the 1851 & 1861 census with no luck so in the end I gave up and went down another branch. In the last month more information has turned up about the family so my question is : Is there a way of someone who lives in the South of England to look at the records of St Cross Church, Clayton? Or would I have to make a trip to the Manchester Local Studies Library? Can you buy fiches or is there anything online? Thank you for taking the time to read this, I really appreciate it ~ best wishes Vanda www.horrockshunter.blogspot.com __________________________________________________________ Free games for a wet weekend - http://www.tiscali.co.uk/play __________________________________________________________

    1. [ENG-MAN] BENT family - Ardwick area of Manchester
    2. Barb O'Neil
    3. Hi there from "Down Under" I wonder if I'm the only person in the world researching this particular family - it seems like it some times.......! My apologies for this being a rather long message, but it seems pointless to post a "generic" query when maybe some of the details shown could just create a spark of interest or recognition....... I have Laurence BENT and his 2nd wife Mary nee WOOD married 16 Jun 1823 in Manchester Cathedral. Their children - Emma born c. 1827 Edwin b. c 1832 Emily b. ???? Eleanor b. c 1836 I have a christening record for the 4 children in Manchester Cathedral 5 March 1837. I have since found a 5th child Lettis aged 2 on the 1841 census. I also noted that on that census return the children are shown as Emma, Edwin, Amelia, Elinor and Lettis. (someone once said that the names Amelia and Emily are interchangeable but not sure if this is so). My particular line is that of Eleanor who married James GALLAGHER 10 Oct 1859 Manchester Cathedral. They had 8 children between 1860 and 1873 - Emma, Amelia, Edward, Harry, Eleanor, Annie, Elizabeth and Maude. They lived in Smith Street, Ardwick - James' occupation was "Collector for Burial Society". This family came to Australia - Eleanor and the children dep. London "Gauntlet" 18/9/75 - arr. Brisbane, Queensland, Australia 7/2/1876 My ongoing problem is that whilst I have a record of Eleanor and her 8 children arriving, after many years of searching I am still unable to locate anything to tell me the movements of her husband James. (Family story has it that he came to Australia first, saved up to pay their fares and then sent for them.) Deductions from the age of the youngest child and the date of birth of the 9th child in Australia point to a time span of between 1873 and 1877. If only I could find him........! Of Eleanor's siblings there is information to show that: Emma married John Allen THOMPSON 08 Feb 1847 in Manchester. Edwin married Alice TEER 01 Jan 1853 in the Cathedral & Parish Church, Manchester No details are known of Emily (or Amelia) There is a Death regn. for Lettice BENT June qtr. 1842, Manchester which may relate to the 5th child. Can anyone tell me if there is some way to find if there is anyone researching the family lines that follow on from the children who stayed in England eg Emma, Edwin and Emily (or Amelia).......? The child born to Eleanor and James in Australia in 1877 was named John Thompson GALLAGHER (after the husband of Eleanor's sister Emma, so it would appear there was some communication way back then.) I guess what I'm wondering is - do the descendants of those who stayed in the UK spend time researching what happened to their relatives who left the country....? Are there likely to be any UK records of people who went to Australia between 1873 and 1877....? If there is anyone out there who has any connection to this family or can offer any suggestions for me to follow up, I would be delighted to hear from you. Fingers crossed. Barb O'Neil Queensland Australia

    3. Sandra, it is most likely that Elizabeth died in childbirth. I have one ancestor whose death was in the same quarter as a suspected child. The district, vol number were the same and the page numbers were consecutive. I sent for the mother's certificate and it stated date of death October 27, cause of death as "childbed", so I did not have to send for the child's certificate. In my case it was confirmed by finding the child's birth date and baptism both Oct 25 in the church registers. The mother's death date was two days later and her daughter must have died shortly after. 3. Someone was just talking about "Cheetwood" Street being close to Strangeways Prison in Manchester. My 3rd great grandfather James THOMPSON wrote a letter to my 2nd great grandfather in America in 1853 and his address on the letter was on "Cheetwood St", Strangeways, Manchester, England. Would anyone possibly have a map or listing of people living on Cheetwood in Strangeways during the 1840 - 1870 timeframe? Thank you so much.
