    3. Sent: Thursday, July 10, 2008 10:01 PM Subject: [ENG-MAN] The cost of a Birth certificate Vanda asked "Please would SKS tell me the cost of a birth certificate as I would like to buy one from the Manchester Register Office." I know there have been various replies to this question but might I make several comments based on my experience. In the early days of my research, I sent cheques (one per certificate, plus a stamped addressed envelope) to the local offices. The staff tended to be very helpful even 'phoning on occasion to clarify the request, or telling me that I had applied to the wrong office, but they would pass my letter on, or that I'd addressed the cheque to the wrong person! However, in those days, the certificate would be handwritten. The information was correct*. (see below) Then I received a photocopy of my G Grandparents marriage from Hull - and saw their signatures! Lump in the throat time. This local office had invested in photocopying facilities as they regarded it as a more efficient method of responding to requests. Now we have 2 options: Apply to the local office IF they accept requests - some don't due to staff cutbacks meaning they have to concentrate on applications for the living;-) This costs £7 plus the sae. Some records are photocopied, others handwritten. Apply to Southport online via the website, which still costs £7 and no need for a 2nd stamped addressed envelope, so slightly cheaper. You DO need a credit card of course. Southport photocopy the actual entry and send it out quite quickly. I've spoken to staff at Southport on the telephone and they have always been helpful. Re * above. I mistakenly applied to Southport for a marriage certificate that I later realised I had already received as a handwritten copy. However, the photocopy contained 2 witness signatures rather than the one on the handwritten copy! The 2nd signature was a vital clue as it turned out.... So 'yer pays yer money and takes yer choice'.... Regards, Ruth in Brum (Birmingham, England)

    1. [ENG-MAN] TOWHEY and historical directories website
    2. Hi Jackie If you search the name TOWHEY at _www.historicaldirectories.org_ (http://www.historicaldirectories.org) you will find entries for the name in both the 1895 and 1911 directories. 1895 Frederick TOWHEY, a musician, is living at 8 Boundary Street, H. and David TOWEY, warehouseman, is living at 29 Taylor Strret, Bury New Road, HB 1911 Frederick TOWHEY, draper, living at 615 Oldham Road, NH and David TOWAY, householder, 29 Taylor Street, Oldham Road You will also be able to check the other directories that were published at that time in which your ancestors do NOT appear. This may help you to get a time frame for them. If you're not familiar with the directories website its well worth spending a bit of time experimenting with it. You can glean so much information and can put your ancestors in context - I just love it! Just two tips. When searching for a person, search on the surname first - then add a letter if you wish. And remember that the info in the directories will be at least a year old by the time they reached publication. Hope this helps and that I'm not trying to teach you to suck eggs. Best Ruth

    3. We think my great grandparents had a Drapers Shop 615 Oldham Road NH. We have no idea of the name of the shop. The information apparently came from Manchester and Salford Directory 1911, if anyone has access to these directory's, could they please do a 'Look Up' for me and try to establish how long they had the shop for. Their names were Frederick William Lovely or Loval Towhey Ellen Towhey. We know that there were at least 3 children that survived, my grandmother Mary Ellen, Thomas Harold (died age 20 1910) and Ada. There was a Frederick junior who died infancy in Brighton but there is a possibility that twins were born to Ellen and Frederick. I have the family on census until 1901 but after that there are lots of gaps. Regards Jackie

    1. [ENG-MAN] James Page and Charles Horace Page
    2. Chris Mellors
    3. Charles Page had a furniture business in 264 Stretford Road, Hulme and 25 Drake Street I believe it was a double fronted corner property - so one premises with two addresses. I know that Charles Page died in 1911 - I would like to know if the business continued after his death (he had 10 children - one of them may have continued). James Page was the son of Charles - he moved to Stockport and had a business at 35 Junction Road he was a cabinet maker - I would like to know how long he was in business there and is it possible to tell if he was ever in partnership with anyone - possibly his brother Walter. Another family member felt James may have been in business in Cheadle at some point also. James was born in 1876 Hulme Manchester. Any information on theses two relatives would be appreciated. Thanks Chris

    3. From: anzaks@gmail.com Sent: Thursday, July 10th. 2008 Subject: A Birth Query. Hello ! Manchester, I have a Birth certificate of a Ancestor born Birkenhead, Cheshire, 1902.which although, shows the father's first given name as being correct in accordance with a fair amount of intensive family research records, etc. the Child's father, chose to use the Child's unmarried mother's surname, (born, 1872) rather than that of his own of whom, he as the father, was born c1829. 22 years later, my Ancestor married at the age of 24, (his mother still unwed) the information entered on his marriage certificate shows his father's first name differs completely to that on his birth certificate. As I have a reliable source of information which may help to identity this 1902 father, of whom, was married in Salford, Lancashire,1876.who died in Birkenhead, 1905. I am wondering whether there is anyone who can please, tell me whether the Registry Office, would hold a consequent record, of a document which, would under the above circumstances contain a specimen of the father's signature, or mark of a cross, of authenticity that may hopefully, enable me to hold a candle to, that which should appear on his original 1876 marriage certificate. 3. Hi Jackie, Thanks for the extra info.................you've got a job on there!!! (as if you didn't know). All I can add, is that I got my Grandfather's WW1 records in 2 ways. 1) I believed he was a Royal Marine and enlisted a researcher to find him..cost abt. £15 last year. The only info I had was his name, place of birth = Manchester and possible year of birth! (I got the researcher from the National Archives site) 2) I trawled the web via Google, and found a Forum for WW1. As a result, I was informed that the Fleet Air Museum had firther records, and these were sent free of charge!! I feel honoured to be so lucky!! I had searched for over a year though! I wish you well. I have my parents wedding cert and Dad's Irish School Records. I've managed to trace the descendants from his Irish birth family, unfortunately they knew nothing of my father, he was a well kept family secret. At the time of my fathers birth, his very young unmarried mother should have been in boarding school (Catholic Convent) in England (Berwick on Tweed) but she obviously wasn't, the school didn't have but a mother and baby unit attached to it. As far as I can make out her parents must have been supportive to her.The parents were Irish travelling variety artist based in Ireland. I have not been able to track down where his mother gave birth to him. There is a possibility that it could have been America. She did make several trips to America before finally settling there in 1929. My father appears to have been left in Ireland with his grandfather and very soon afterwards left with the McElhinney family. The family left Ireland in 1938/9, my father would have be 13 or 14 yrs old at the time. Going by this I should imagine he was 'called up' to join the Army at the age 18 or 19 yrs (approx 1943/4) it's where he was living at that time that I'm trying to find out so that I can get his Army records which might give me more clues.. <snip>
