    3. Heather et al That was the convention as that was the way that streets were built except for those using a grid system as favoured by American towns. It is the natural progression for a town's development. A further convention was that odd numbers were always on the left hand side going away from the town centre. The town where I live is a relic from Regency times and is a true example. Before it became a Royal favourite, it was just a hamlet, then sulphur springs were discovered,, wells constructed and wealthy people flocked to build houses. Names like Montpellier Spa and Pittville Pump Room exist today. Terry Heath Cheltenham UK

    1. [ENG-MAN] Help with 1841 census entry? BOSWELL
    2. Hi Terry, You could try following: Go to 1841 census search page and enter:- Residence: Derbyshire Page# : 42 Click Search This will give you a list of people who are enumerated on pages 42 in different parts of Derbyshire (204 persons total!). You'll need to check the Residence column to find the nearest place to Michleover, Shardlow, possibly a neighbouring Parish. It might help to sub. to the Derbyshire List - someone with local knowledge may have a Parish Boundary Map. Also there is a Rootsweb Mailing List "UK-Romani" - http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/other/Ethnic-Romani/UK-ROMANI.html Happy hunting, Regards, Madalyn > ----- Original Message -----<snip> > From: "terry" <terry4197@optusnet.com.au> > Sent: Saturday, July 12, 2008 3:00 AM > >> I found a Moses Boswell on the 1841census in Derbyshire using ( >> Ancestry.com.UK). 1. [ENG-MAN] SHEPHERD, SHOEMAKERS & JOINERS, HULME AND MANCHESTER
    2. ROB SHEPHERD
    3. Hello Does anyone have a connection with WILLIAM SHEPHERD born around 1799/1800 Hulme and his brother JAMES SHEPHERD born around 1805, Hulme. They were both joiners and both the children of GEORGE SHEPHERD, a shoemaker of Hulme. Can anyone tell me which churches were around in Hulme and adjacent Manchester at this time where I may be able to locate their baptisms? Are there any online resources about boot and shoe making in Lancashire in th 1800s that anyone is aware of? Finally, does anyone have any maps of the Hulme area from the 1800s which they may have scanned and would be happy to share and email? Many thanks Rob

    3. Hi Ruth, May thanks for this...It's fabulous, I'm going to check through the directories this evening. I've never been able to find any other family connections to Frederick other than his wife and children. I have them on the census records from 1881 and their marriage in 1879.On the cert it looks like Frederick's father was name James and a Station Master. It's really strange to find them in a drapers because Frederick and wife were musicians and also they sold musical instruments Frederick was blind. I'm a little excited about David Towey and although the name is spelt differently there could be a possibility of them being related. Would be fantastic if they were it might lead to finding Frederick's parentage and siblings. I have all the info back to the late 1700's on Frederick's wife Ellen Pattingale but Frederick is an enigma, on one census it states Frederick born 1856 was born in Dublin and on another Woolwich Kent, it's definitely the same Frederick. Once again, many thanks. Wouldn't research be difficult with the help of other researcher? Kindest regards Jackie. ----- Original Message ----- From: <RuthGenda@aol.com> To: <eng-manchester@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, July 11, 2008 9:14 AM Subject: [ENG-MAN] TOWHEY and historical directories website > Hi Jackie > > If you search the name TOWHEY at > > _www.historicaldirectories.org_ (http://www.historicaldirectories.org) > > you will find entries for the name in both the 1895 and 1911 directories. > > 1895 Frederick TOWHEY, a musician, is living at 8 Boundary Street, H. > and David TOWEY, warehouseman, is living at 29 Taylor Strret, Bury New > Road, > HB > > 1911 Frederick TOWHEY, draper, living at 615 Oldham Road, NH > and David TOWAY, householder, 29 Taylor Street, Oldham Road > > You will also be able to check the other directories that were published > at > that time in which your ancestors do NOT appear. 2. terry
    3. G'day Oh wise one's, For a few years now I have been trying to find out if a family of Boswell's on my wife's side are connected to the Gypsy Boswells. Family rumours say there is a connection but it is very difficult to make that vital connection. I found a Moses Boswell on the 1841census in Derbyshire using ( Ancestry.com.UK). On the census page there are a family of Boswell Gypsies, most of the family members are listed as (name not Known). However at either side of the page is an entry; (gypsies on page 42) & (entered in error). Using Ancestry.com I can only proceed from this page to page 19. Does any one know how I can get to page 42? 1841 Census, HO 107 /189/11 , Derbyshire, Parish Mickleover, page 3. Moses Boswell age 55, DOB abt 1786. Any suggestions very welcome. All the best, Terry Craven

    1. [ENG-MAN] 1861 Census for Ashton-under-Lyne
    2. Another question please. I have searched the indexes for the 1861 census a 1000 times (or it seems like it) for William, Jane, George, Sarah & Maria HORROCKS and can't find them anywhere. I have decided to do it the old fashioned way by just look through the census returns one at a time. Needle in a haystack I know. I'm concentrating on Ashton-under-Lyne at the moment. When I've looked at the enumeration districts for Ashton Town they are in numerical order, District 1, District 2 etc. When I look at the enumeration districts for Audenshaw they have letters following them: District 2f View description of enumeration district District 3f View description of enumeration district District 4f View description of enumeration district District 6d View description of enumeration district District 7d View description of enumeration district Is there a reason for this please?
