Hi Jane Ive been looking at your Johnston's. I don't have ancestry at the moment, but just wanted to clarify a couple of things. "Relict" - does that mean widow? The only King Street I know in Manchester is actually in Central Manchester...and is still there. It's bound to be on one of the modern street map sites. Have you found a death for Andrew/John? And have you details of the first born son, John? Pat ----- Original Message ----- From: arcmikmum@talktalk.net To: Manchester Sent: Tuesday, July 15, 2008 10:31 AM Subject: [ENG-MAN] Fab site - now a little help is needed! Please. I found a death notice for my 4 x gr grandmother Elizabeth JOHNSTON (nee FAIRBAIRN) listed in the Glasgow Herald in Mar 1851, it states: At 20 Stock St, Manchester, on the 21st instant, Elizabeth Fairbairn, relict of Andrew Johnston, Esq, architect. I've got Elizabeth on Stock St in 1841 with her daughter Jesse, and then I have Jesse at the address in 1851, by 1861 Jesse is in Glasgow, Scotland with her sister Elizabeth, but I can still find no Andrew. To add more confusion, when his daughter Margaret married in 1847 Edinburgh, Andrew is down as John, I have from the 1834 Pigots directory for Manchester (thanks to Lynne :o)) John JOHNSTON, architect, 63 King St. So I'm thinking that, that John is actually my Andrew. I know he's stayed in Manchester, because when his daughter Elizabeth died in 1871 (again listed in the Glasgow Herald) it says 'eldest daughter of the late Andrew Johnston, Esq, architect, Manchester'. At this moment in time I don't even know where Andrew was born because I've been unable to find him on any census returns. Him and Elizabeth married in Edinburgh in 1802, they had their 1st child John there, the rest were born in and around London. I have no idea why they ended up in Manchester. What district of Manchester is King St in? I want to try and find no 63 in 1841. Can anyone help me find Andrew (or John)? Jane :o)

I can hardly read an address on a marriage certificate. It looks like 11 Taxbay Rd (the 1st letter could also be an S) and I assume it would be in Chorlton cum Hardy. Is this familiar to anyone? Thanks. Carole

Hi everyone Just wondering if anyone has heard of or knows where I can find out anything about a business named Ward Bros that was in the Cotton industry in the late 1800s. According to two books written by my some-numbered-Great Uncle John Ward, called Moston Characters at Work and Moston Characters at Play (which by the way we have copies of if anyone wanted me to check something sometime), the owners were two of his brothers. They lived in Moston, Manchester so I imagine the business was there also or somewhere nearby. I must read up those books again and see if it actually says. Thanks in advance. Thanks Kath. I had most of those, but not all. It does lead to discrepancies. I believe George died in 1910, but you have a listing from 1913. And I have one for that address (Henry street) with his daughter Alice listed that is from 1911. Won't it be nice when the 1911 census comes out? I'm guessing noone on this list is researching these Howlands? Hello Darryl: Well, I was looking at the 1903 Slaters on the Historical Directories site. You could try just browsing around Port Street and Great Ancoats Street using the topographical and street directory. The streets are listed alphabetically with Great Ancoats Street under G rather than A. You might find the warehouse that you are looking for. In 1901 your Ralph HOWLAND appears to be in High Wycombe rather than Manchester and indeed, they probably never lived in this area but just ran a business here. You could try a similar technique on a suitable Liverpool directory for Emlyn Street. It might be worth trying for something a bit earlier than 1903, in case it had all gone pear-shaped by then. Good Luck, Irene
Hi Helen, First of all, you need to decide which Church or Churches you want to look at. http://www.manchester.gov.uk/site/scripts/documents_info.php?categoryID=448&documentID=464 If you then scroll down the page, you can click on any area and a list of Churches appears. Make a record of the reference numbers of the correct microfilm. If you are able to visit Manchester Central Library yourself, it is then free to look at the microfilm. If you can't visit, I'm afraid you have to rely on some kind soul to do a look up for you - or pay a researcher. Someone on this site has recently been looking into this, and discovered that staff at Mcr Central will do one free look up, but only if you know the exact church and date of baptism/christening. http://www.lan-opc.org.uk/indexp.html Alternatively, the on-line Parish Clerks are fantastic, and it would be worth looking at the sites to see what they have. I have always found them to be exceptionally helpful whenever I needed to contact them. Hello Daryl: Using the free Historical Directory site at http://www.historicaldirectories.org, I was able to discover that number 90 was on the west side of Great Ancoats Street on the corner of Port Street. The occupant in 1903 was TIANIS, Carlo, a shopkeeper. Then going to the census in Ancestry, I was able to confirm that he was the occupant in 1901. Since Carlo's name was garbled in one or both of these, I had to use his next door neighbour Walter Fletcher BOYCOTT who was obligingly present for both the census and the directory. Carlo was a street organ hirer and boarding house keeper. Is he the one you want? Regards, Irene

Thanks Irene, Well, it's not what I hoped it would be. Perhaps it would help to give some background. I found a notice in the Gazette in 1905 that says in part, "NOTICE is hereby given, that the Partnership hereto- fore subsisting between us the undersigned, Walter Howland and Ralph Howland, carrying on business as Chair Manufacturers and Upholsterers, at Denmark-street, High Wycombe, Bucks., at No. 9, Emlyn-street, West Derby-road, Liverpool, and at No. 90, Great Ancoats-street, Manchester, under the style or firm of " R. HOWLAND AND SONS," has been dissolved" This was news to me as I didn't realize R. Howland and Sons was anywhere but Wycombe. I have been able to find references to 2 other businesses for that same address, neither of them R. Howland and Sons. Slater's from 1911 lists Port Street Warehouse Co. The 1886 version lists William H. Wallworth (with an additional reference to 76 Port Street). So I was hoping they'd (Howlands) be listed on the 1901 census. Any suggestions would be gratefully received. Hello All, First, I'd like to thank the person (sorry I forgot who it was) who posted the link to the London Gazette database. It's turned up a few very interesting items. Second, as a result of this, I'm hoping someone can look up something for me. Could some kind soul with Ancestry access tell me who or what is listed at 90 Great Ancoats street in 1901?
