Hi Pamela This William Eshelby may be a strong contender. I see that he was 70 years old which is a suprise I see he was living at Albington Street - was this anywhere near Aytoun Street, Hart Street and Bloom Street - perhaps Mike may be kind enough to help again? THANKS VERY MUCH TO ALL LISTERS WHO HAVE HELPED WITH THIS QUERY - MUCH APPRECIATED! Rob
Thanks Pauline, the nmap shows Independant College and I have sent this off... It was between College road and Clarendon road in Whalley Range. It was still there around 1970. Hello Rob There is a William ESHELBY in Manchester in 1841. Aged 70 not born in County . In the family are Charlotte aged 50 Jane aged 15 & Margaret & William aged 10. Could they be your family? Pamela
It still may be that he had died . I have quite a few marriage certificates on which it does not say deceased and I have later found out that he was . I believe it was up to the individuals marrying as to whether they put deceased against their fathers name. Hope this helps, regards Kath --- On Sat, 9/8/08, ROB SHEPHERD <robshepherd1974@googlemail.com> wrote: > From: ROB SHEPHERD <robshepherd1974@googlemail.com> > Subject: [ENG-MAN] Census Mystery - any help appreciated > To: "eng-manchester-l" <ENG-MANCHESTER-L@rootsweb.com> > Date: Saturday, 9 August, 2008, 1:40 PM > I wonder if any fellow listers can help with a puzzle? > > I am interested in the Ashelby family of Manchester. > > I know the father of the family was William Ashelby, and I > have the marriage > certificates of several children > > 1840 Eliza Ashelby (address given as 68 Bloom Street) > 1849 Ann Ashelby (address given as Oldham Road) > 1849 Jane Ashelby (address given as 30 Hart Street) > 1853 Margaret Ashelby (address given as 30 Hart Street) > > I'm assuming that at least some of these addresses > would also have applied > to William Ashelby. Could it be Eshelby? Joe In Queens, NY
I wonder if any fellow listers can help with a puzzle? I am interested in the Ashelby family of Manchester. I know the father of the family was William Ashelby, and I have the marriage certificates of several children 1840 Eliza Ashelby (address given as 68 Bloom Street) 1849 Ann Ashelby (address given as Oldham Road) 1849 Jane Ashelby (address given as 30 Hart Street) 1853 Margaret Ashelby (address given as 30 Hart Street) I'm assuming that at least some of these addresses would also have applied to William Ashelby. He wasn't listed as deceased on any of the certificates, yet I can't find him on any of the censuses under Ashelby. I've also looked as Ashley and Ashby and even Axelby. Does anyone have any suggestions as to other spelling variants or can help to locate the family? There was also a daughter Mary and possibly a son David. Thanks to Mavis for looking on the 1851 water damaged census index. Any help from the census or other sources would be much appreciated. Thanks very much. Rob
Hello all: I am wondering if anyone remembers anything about baseball teams playing in the Manchester area in the 1930's and 1940's? Family legend has it that my Canadian-born grandfather Charlie White played baseball professionally or semi-professionally during those years and I'd like to try to find out what team(s) he may have played for. I have some old photos but unfortunately there are no logos visible and no notations as to what team they are. My most recent discovery is that he worked at the Ford plant during the war and I'm wondering if there might have been a baseball team associated with the plant. He lived in Salford on Wellington St E. until at least 1951, have no record of him after that. Any sports buffs with long memories out there? TIA, Gail

Hello Eileen, Check the 1891 census for the surrounding street names. and let me know what they were. A strong clue would be if he was catholic. St Bedes appears to be the only place in this part of Manchester that was built to teach priests etc. On the other hand another List member mentioned a Methodist college. Aytoun street was close to Bloom street on the east side of Piccadilly. I have e-mailed this map to Rob. Withington College might also be the Methodist theological college on College Road, off Withington Road, Whalley Range. This only closed down fairly recently (possibly 1980s), became a GMB trades union training centre, and now is the British Muslim Heritage Centre. Regards Geoff Barlow

Hi Mike, I don't know if he actually attended Victoria University, a note in a journal he left to one of his grandchildren mentions the University but not when he attended. I am trying to find out where the attendence records might be found, I know he attended Withington Independent College in 1891 and he was 25 how long he had been there i don't know, and then he emigrated to Canada in 1907. Hi Mavis Many thanks for your lookup much appreciated - unfortunate that the Ashelbys weren't there! Rob
Hi Rob, I found 30 Hart Street, Manchester (London Road disc) but sorry there were no names it looked like there would have been 10 people before the next number 32, must have been illegible. There was no name Ashelby in the surnames list either. Hi David Thanks for the look up - much appreciated Rob
Does anyone have access to the 1851 census for Manchester? I'm looking for the Ashelby family at 30, Hart Street, Manchester Any information much appreciated. Thanks. Rob
I have sent Rob map sections showing Hart street, it was south west of the London road area in 1844. A couple of streets to the east of Portland street and Piccadilly Gardens.
