    3. Ruth, I have to agree with you on that! I too have spent hours searching at Manchester Central Library ... and seeing those entries are just heart breaking...sometimes, 2 children from the same family died on the same day! If anyone wants an internet view of such -- log onto http://www.lan-opc.org.uk/Wigan/Wigan/allsaints/index.html I just picked these years at random - the Wigan site has lots transcribed. Well done Maggie and co! 1. [ENG-MAN] Holmes Buildings, Hulme, 1834
    2. Hello Listers Twice now I've put in a request for a look-up for the burial of my 2xggrandmother, but alas no takers. I'm not surprised. This week I took myself up to Manchester and I spent two-and-a-half full days (10am - 8pm) of my week winding away at the films which showed burials in non-conformist cemetries. Guess what? I've got neck ache and back ache and eye strain... But, I HAVE got the entry for my gggrandmother's burial!!! And those of four of her children. Just three survived. And I've also got in my heart and memory the terrible toll of infant mortality between 1820 and 1835 (the years I was searching). I know, I've read all about it - tables of statistics - pages in novels -seen plays and paintings - but nothing hits home like those stark entries. Often as many as 10 entries to 1 adult. It was appalling. So with the success of questions answered has come a great sadness. They were just babies, you know. But back to the digging. Gggrandmother, Elizabeth FLETCHER, was buried in Great Bridgewater St. Methodist Cemetery - not Rusholme as I first thought - on 21 March 1834 and her address was given as Holmes Buildings, Hulme. Does anyone know anything about these buildings? Where were they in Hulme? The archivists and I searched old maps, including Godfrey's of 1849 but couldn't find Holmes Buildings. Originally the family had lived at 29 Little Bridgewater Street - and we couldn't find that either - and after that lived at 2 Bank Place, Salford - ran out of time to look. Later, husband Charles moved to 3 Princess Street, his three surviving children all off his hands and earning reasonable livings - in fact, doing very well. If anyone has information about these addresses I'd be grateful - and Mike, if you read this and can spot Holmes Buildings on one of your maps I'd be really happy. Thanks Ruth

    1. [ENG-MAN] Ellis in Rhodes / Middleton
    2. John Ellis
    3. Hi, We have recently discovered an ancestor who left North Wales and settled in Rhodes, Middleton. This motivated us to visit the excellent Reference Library in Middleton. We found that he lodged with a Newall family at 54 Barman's Walk, Rhodes. Our ancestors name was John Edward Ellis who was born in 1891 at South Hetton in Durham. Very soon after his birth his Welsh parents returned to Holywell Wales, Can anyone connect with this Ellis family or have any information ? Regards Iris and John Ellis P.S. We would like to mention the excellent Reference library in Middleton. The staff were most capable and helpful, and we have visited to none better over the last 25 years.

    2. Lorna
    3. Dear fellow research hounds.. I really need help finding a marriage record between Ellen (or Eleanor) EDMONDS (Edmunds) b 1829 and James PICKERING b 1831 that appears to have been recorded in Salfords St Simons church on Springfield Road. What Im looking for is her father and mothers names. I can't see any microfilm records for St Simons anywhere so I have to appeal to some kind soul who might have access to local records. I think a copy of the register is available at Salford Local Family History Centre. In an old booklet Parish Register Holdings at Salford Local History Library, they seem to have the C of E Registers for St Simon's Church, Salford, marriages 1849>1926. What I suspect is her father was Charles Edmonds and mother Mary Ellen Grundy What we know: Marriage: 1859 - Salford, St. Simon (between Oct>Dec) Ellen EDMUNDS and James PICKERING 1861 census entry for this couple: 11 East Philip Street, Salford, (Greengate) James PICKERING 30 Chemical Manufactory b.Cheshire, Churton Ellen wife 30 Manchester, Lancs. Mary A dau. 5 b.Salford John son 2 months b.Salford I have been unable to locate a birth for a Mary A Pickering but there is one for a Mary Ann EDMONDS b.1856 Salford, Greengate area John was reg. as John Pickering in March Q/1861 Salford (Greengate) Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Lorna Rosenstein

    2. Sally Haden
    3. Hi Mike, Looking for clues... It's curious to think what a 'station' would have been in 1813? A dictionary couples the meaning of 'station' with 'military', so perhaps it was associated with the Barracks or the police? Perhaps you could email the Manchester Archives to ask about it. I presume he had died by the 1841 census, when you would be able to pick him up? Another thought... perhaps the boundaries of Hulme were different to what they were later in the century? 3. Sorry Bryan, I dont see a Broughton road in Hulme. :(( I did mention to Rob, there is a Station street to the south east of London Road Railway station in 1844. But this is in the Chorlton on Medlock area. The time period that Rob is looking into is before the railway lines and stations. Its very possible this street was ripped up before 1841 in Hulme to make way for the new tracks and stations.
