Hi Mike, Many thanks for the map section. It's a great help, I'm completely out of my comfort zone in Pendleton! I have the 1849 Godfrey Maps for Man.Victoria and Salford (Adelphi) which gives me a small section of Broughton Road starting at Williamson, Salford and Willow Streets (by St.Matthias Church) and runs to the start of Green Gate. Could you give me some idea of the distance between the section of Broughton Road that you sent and where my maps begin. Many thanks, Madalyn ----- Original Message ----- From: "Mike Morris" <morrisind@rogers.com > Hello Madalyn, > Bird street was in the St Thomas Ward in Pendleton. Hi Madalyn, I can only do a rough estimate, my maps are not on paper and this is spread across two maps, it makes it difficult to measure them. From Bird street I would guess its about 1/2 mile or less to Williamson and Willow in a south east direction. I cannot locate Bird street in 1844. I dont think it was built in that time period. Hi, Wondered whether SKS with access to 1851 unfilmed census for Pendleton could check on the occupants of 17 Bird Street for me. In 1861 census this address is in the Parish of Pendleton, E.D. St. Georges. Many thanks, Madalyn
Hello Madalyn, Bird street was in the St Thomas Ward in Pendleton. I have sent you the map section showing this in 1894. St George 's church was to the north about 15 or more minutes walk. You could try Philips Park which was east of Sophia street. Or St Josephs to the north east of the street.. I have sent you the map section. You can see from this he must have lived on the north side of the street in the middle section of Sophia street. Lorna, there's someone that regularly responds to queries on RootsWeb's British Army board who seems very knowledgable about all things military. If no one on this list can assist you, try posting on the board at <http://boards.rootsweb.com/topics.Military.uk.britarmy/mb.ashx> and perhaps someone will be able to help there. Lynne

Hi Listers I'm still scratching... looking for the elusive Holmes Buildings, Hulme. Could be a registrar's error, perhaps? In Pigot & Deans 1821 directory I found Hulmes Buildings, Bailey Street, London Road In Pigot & Slaters 1841 - Hulmes Buildings, Broad Street, Pendleton In Directory of Man. & Salford 1853 - Hulmes Buildings Pendleton None of these strictly Hulme, are they? But then there's Holts Buildings, Ferneley St., Hulme. Does anyone recognize these? Is this address a possibility? I'm assuming the word 'Buildings' means a terrace of houses. Interestingly, in the 1841 Census Charles FLETCHER was living in Chatham Street, C-on-M. And between 1834 and 1841 he had been living in Wilton St, off Oxford Street. Maybe his business address was ??? Buildings? But it was on a death registration so that would be a bit odd, I think. I'm chatting on. So I'll stop. Any thoughts from anyone out there would be much appreciated. Ruth (very puzzled)
