    3. Hi Marian: Post 1837 marriages should have the name and occupation of the fathers of the bride & groom - if they provided this information. Access to microfilm of the registers has become a little more difficult with the closing of Manchester Central Library's research room. Someone else may know what the current alternatives are. However, the LDS church has microfilmed these registers and you should be able to order the films from your local LDS Genealogy Library. You may want to check and see if your nearest LDS libraries actually already have the films. Other patrons may have ordered them permanently. Best wishes, Irene

    3. Hi Jean The best way to find out if your messages are reaching the list is to look at the list's archives at http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/index/ENG-MANCHESTER/2011-02 If you've posted a message to the list and it's not in the list's archives, check to make sure that the message was sent in plain text (not MIME or HTML). If the message was sent in MIME or HTML, try sending it again in plain text. If you continue to have problems posting to the list, try sending an on topic message to the list and CC my private address. That way at least I'll get a copy and may be able to suss out the problem. Kind regards, Lynne list admin. lees jean wrote: >Sorry for the test but i am wondering if any of my messages are getting >through to the list > > >Jean in (Birmingham) >

    3. Hi Mary Lou, I was thinking along similar lines but perhaps a heavy engine used to operate a press in the forging of metal, he was at one time a Blacksmith. At one time I worked in an old factory machine shop in Ancoats, Manchester. This company used a 'Donkey' engine in its basement to drive a line shaft attached to the ceiling, it set all the machines in motion on the factory floor. It took over four minutes to set this beast in motion. In that time period there were a number of steam driven vehicles on the road. The steam roller was one, but also a local cotton mill had a steam driven truck/lorry making deliveries. It was a regular site on Ancoats lane. All in all, it makes me feel sure the person I am researching was not a Train driver. All my best and my thanks for your response. 2. Hi Mike.....it is quite possible that he worked in the local mill: Stationary Engine Driver Operated steam factory engine, used for all processes, usually linked by a system of shafts, pulleys and belts I've seen this occupation many times for mill workers. mary lou In a message dated 2/20/2011 4:22:34 P.M. 3. Thank you Eric, that was interesting. My chap James HULME was listed as Blacksmith during the 1841 census, an engine driver in an 1849 Baptismal record and 1851 Manchester census. unfortunately he had died before the 1861 census. There were numerous steam engines in use in them days and I wonder if his occupation was in a factory or even a mine. I have a feeling that the early trains had Train drivers not Engine drivers. 3. Hello Mike Very Interesting. Train Drivers 1844. Originally, however, the term stems from the Railway Regulation Act 1844. Working people were increasingly travelling long distances to find employment in the growing industrial centres. Such third class facilities as there were consisted usually of open wagons, often without seats, nicknamed "stanhopes". The Act was an attempt to make train travel available - and safe - for those who could ill afford it. The Act set minimum standards for passenger accommodation, and was influenced by the railway accident at Sonning Cutting on Christmas Eve 1842 when nine stonemasons were thrown from open wagons and killed.
