Hi Stephen I tried a search on this site, but couldn't come up with anything, unfortunately. I tried the surname, put 01/01/1860 as the date then 40 years to take the search up to 1900 [1]http://www.manchester.gov.uk/forms/form/584/search_burial_records Kind regards, Pam. Sally thanks very much for the replies and clues - I appreciate it and yes we did have the arrival listing cheers Stephen
My father has been researching the HOLINGER side of our family for many years. John HOLINGER b 1826 Switzerland - d 1 April 1883 in Chorlton John's first wife Jane TOWNSEND (b abt 1824-d 1857 in Chorlton) John's mother Anna HOLINGER (b abt 1801 Switzerland - d 1879 Chorlton) While we have many details about John HOLINGER's family by his 2 marriages both in Manchester, Australia and Switzerland, we have never been able to establish where John HOLINGER, Jane TOWNSEND (HOLINGER) or Anna HOLINGER are buried. The 1881 Census has John HOLINGER living at Willow Bank Withington Re, Dis. Chorlton Sub reg district Didsbury, while the FreeBMD lists death in 1883 as being registered in Chorlton any clues as to where we next can look? thank you Stephen

Hi Stephen There is an extensive list of churches in the Didsbury area from the excellent Genuki website: http://www.genuki.org.uk/cgi-bin/churches?CCC=LAN,GR=SJ846903 One way to narrow down the possibilites is to order the death certificate and see if a residence is quoted so you could start with the nearest churches and work outwards. It may also help if you know what religion he followed - was he Catholic, Welseyan, Methodist, Baptist etc etc.? Do you know which church was used for marriages/baptisms and were they consistent with their use of it? I checked with the OPC website and currently they have registers transcribed for St James marriages, but it's worth checking the updates I send round as and when the databases are updated. I'm not affiliated to the OPC project in any way, just a big admirer of the hard work they do, so I don't have any information as to what future transcriptions are down for release, sadly. Image sent to Diane off-list. The birth records are in different volumes for each year and maybe even each quarter of each year. So there's no relationship between the page numbers in different years. Perhaps someone who has seen the actual books can tell us what they look like. Are there any local registrars lurking on the list? Regards, Irene
I found Buxton street in the east side of Hulme. I thought it rung a bell and looked closer. Its on the east side of Oxford street. Not far from where I lived during the war years. I have sent you a section of a map that shows this street. Buxton street was just a short distance south east of London road station and ran south into London road. I have sent you this section of the map. To pin point some of the street locations, look for your relatives in the census records and make a note of some of the surrounding street names. That you Irene for finding my Mary RIDING Dicken's in the 1911 Census at 915 Chester Road, Stretford, Lancashire. Ancestry.com only allows me an index, Mr? M Dickens at 915 Chester Road, Stretford, 2 males and 2 females. Sadly there isn't any more information listed online. Checking the Manchester birth records(which I assume were sent to the central registration office) Edith Dickens has 1883, Oct-Dec Manchester, 8d, pg 216 and Catherine Dickens has 1885, Jul-Sep Manchester, 8d pg 213. Why would the 1885 birth's page number be before 1883? William Dickens has 1895, Oct-Dec, Manchester, 8d pg 229. Diane RIDING Ball

Hi All, Jane Emma BROADIE was born 1869 in Manchester and married William Henry ADSHEAD. In 1901 she is living at 39, Fairfield Street, Manchester with her husband and her father, another William, and a couple of boarders. There is something in the occupation column for Jane Emma I cannot read. Any ideas appreciated. Christine
Hi Diane: I can't answer your question but perhaps can shed some light. In 1911, the family from 1901 is at Chester Road, Stretford. Edward has apparently died but luckily his widow Mary has filled in the marriage information in error. She states that she was married for 30 years and that there are 3 children still living and 4 that have died. She did not give the total number of children born alive. This would mean that for the 1901 family, that particular Mary is not a second wife. Also 30 years matches the marriage date of 1881 for Edward Dickens and Mary Riding. The question remains - where are Edith and Catherine in 1891? It's possible they were with grandparents or other relatives and the surname got mangled. Keep looking! Best wishes, Irene
Hi Listers, I thought I would introduce myself. My BIRMINGHAM ancestors look like they hail from the Manchester area. Furthest back I have so far is my 4th Great grandfather Peter. Not sure where or when he was born only child I have found so far is my 3rd GGfather John b abt 1823 in Manchester who married Ellen GORMAN who had 7 Children all born in Manchester. Is anyone researching this line? Thanks Nicci
Could someone check the trade manuals to see if there are two Glass Blowers, named Edward Dickins/Dickens, born abt 1850 in Manchester. He married my Mary Riding, born abt 1860 in Salford.
