Lynne, many thanks for the update, and huge thanks to all those who've contributed so much time and effort to help people like me. Best wishes, Pam.
Hi Antony and Mary Lou Thankyou very much for your feedback and suggestions. It prompted me to ring my uncle again and try to pin down the dates more accurately. The result is that the 'wrong' death cert I bought is correct. Anthony died in 1900 of phthisis in the Withington workhouse. My uncle remembers his father telling him that Annie died young and that Anthony died of a broken heart. So I needed to look for a death for Annie prior to 1900. I have located on in the June 1/4 of 1894 in Prestwich. FreeBMD shows Moston as being part of Prestwich so I have sent for the cert. However I am interested to see if the burial records show any further details. All the records I have to date indicate definitely Anthony, not Andrew. Anthony. I will contact you off list. If there is anything I can do for anyone on the list with Australian research, please let me know. If I can't access the actual records for Listers I can probably make a useful suggestion as to where and how to look. Regards and thankyou once again Wendy -------------------------------------------------------- Was it definitely Anthony and not Andrew ? There's a likely candidate for Andrew on FMP's military records who joined the Manchesters and this death registration Andrew Mccormack 1943 Manchester Lancashire on ancestry of a 70 year old. Dear Friends, Oh, dear. How embarrassing. My sincere apologies to Martin for repeating information he had already so kindly forwarded to the list. I just happened to come across the BBC listing and blithely sent it on to the lists without first bothering to find out if someone else had mentioned it. As you can probably tell (especially Martin!), I am way behind in reading lists messages. I also apologize for my lack of participation on the lists for the last few months. As it does for many of us, life has got in the way. In autumn we added a member to our family, a little girl who we are hoping to adopt. With that addition, all of my spare time flew out the window! Then, a few months ago I hurt my shoulder rather badly, causing me continued sleepless nights and culminating with very recent surgery. The injury, sleep deprivation, and now the surgery, has put a real damper on my use of the computer. And to add to all of that, on Friday our little dog passed away. Fortunately, she led an active, comfortable, and happy life right up to the end, but we are suffering immensely from the loss. This is the first time in my adult life that I've been without a dog and even with six cats (!) and a young child, the quiet is unbelievable. If you've written privately to me and still awaiting a reply, be assured that although it might take a little while, I will respond. Feel free to write again if you think your message has fallen through the cracks. I hope you'll forgive the long moan. I also count my blessing! Thanks to all of you for your continued participation on the lists (and the Lancashire message board) and thanks to Sally for keeping us apprised of Lancashire OPC progress. A very warm welcome to those that have recently joined us. Please jump in and post your queries. Never feel like your question is too basic. We may not have the answers that you seek, but I'm positive several of our many knowledgeable listers will be able to point you in the right direction. Finally, I wanted to ask list members to please give a thought for our friend Beth M., who is leaving the list due to severe health problems. We'll keep you in our thoughts and prayers, Beth. Kindest regards, Lynne
Thanks to Lynne for this fascinating broadcast. It was just fascinating. I've passed to friends and family here in Australia and UK. regards Elizabeth from Victoria, Australia ----- Original Message ----- From: "Lynne" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]>; <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, March 23, 2011 5:33 AM Subject: [ENG-MAN] Tracing Your Roots Census Special: Fox Lane in Leyland; MARSDEN, THRELFALL > Broadcast on BBC Radio 4 - > >> In this Tracing Your Roots Census Special, Sally Magnusson visits Fox >> Lane in Leyland. With the help of genealogist Nick Barratt, she >> explores how, through the Census, we can piece together a street's >> changing history and also uncover secrets about our own family's past. >> >> The first census records date back to the early 1800s. At this time, >> Leyland was a small village which became a small town over the >> nineteenth century. Sally visits one of the original weaver's cottages >> where the owners are intrigued to find out more about the original >> residents. Through the census records we build up a picture of how the >> weaving industry declined in the 1830's, with the weavers required to >> sub-let their cellars to poorer families. As the Industrial Revolution >> progresses we can see in the occupations listed in the census how the >> town evolves through to the beginnings of its famous motor industry. >> >> Plus Sally and Nick are joined by Peter Christian, author of The >> Online Genealogist, and The Expert Guide to the Census. They'll >> discuss how having the Census available online has transformed family >> history research and reflect on what future family historians would >> lose if the Census is abolished. >> >> And we convince one Fox Lane resident to fill out a form for the first >> time, by illustrating what they can learn about their own family's >> past from previous census records. > > > To listen, go to <http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/console/b00zl4dx> > > > > > ~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~ > > PLEASE and THANK YOU -- Don't cost a thing and mean so much. > > > ~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~ > > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without > the quotes in the subject and the body of the message
