    1. [ENG-MAN] 1841 Census

    3. Hi I'm hoping someone maybe able to help me please. I'm looking for a John BRIERCLIFFE or BRITCLIFFE on the 1841 Census. I'm not sure of John's details re birth or age or death but someone has told me that a JOHN BRI-----ITT is entered on the 1841 Census exactly as that. His wife Hannah Briercliffe (spelt Bricliffe on 1841 Census) is living with one of their daughters Elizabeth in the Deansgate/Salford area in Cumberland St. John is not at this residence though. John Briercliffe and Hannah Belfield were married in Rochdale in 1825 no ages given though for either of them. I did find one John Briercliffe born in 1802 to James and Hannah Speakman in Manchester (This James was a farmer). I haven't been able to find an exact birth for John Briercliffe though as I don't have anything else to verify it with. I'm still trying to find his death after 1833 the family were living in the Salford and Manchester areas at this time. John and Hannah's daughter Charlotte died in 1834 in Manchester ( Registered at the Collegiate church Manchester) details of this particular John would be very much appreciated. Kind regards Dianna

    3. Hi, Noticed a John BRI???, aged 25 (probably rounded off) at Salford Union, RG number H0107, piece 586, book/folio 7/36, page 17. Sadly the whole page is very difficult to read but it might be him. The surname is certainly longer than the "BRI???" and there looks like there is an "i" near the end of it. Sorry I can help more but it might be worth trying to see the original page or a good copy somewhere. Best wishes, Charles

    3. I think the Ancestry image for this page is clearer than the one on FMP. I think the surname certainly begins with BRIT and I could be persuaded that it says BRITLIFFE. I'm less sure about the age but think that the occupation might be Warehouseman. I believe that he was not born in county - an N in the "whether born in county" field.   Best wishes, Irene   From: Charles Gunther <[email protected]> >To: [email protected] >Sent: Thursday, June 2, 2011 10:52 AM >Subject: Re: [ENG-MAN] 1841 Census > >Hi, >Noticed a John BRI???, aged 25 (probably rounded off) at Salford Union, RG >number H0107, piece 586, book/folio 7/36, page 17. 2. Christine Benson
    3. Hi All, Can SKS have a look at the occupation of Joseph HILL b 1829 living with sister Mary A. MOORHOUSE at 20 Parsonage Road, Withington on the 1891 census RG12/3162 page 8 and tell me what they think his occupation is. I thought it said "Farmer" but the more I enlarge it the less certain I am as there seem to be more letters at the front and the initial letter does not look like "F". Also has anyone any connections to Edwin MOORHOUSE b 1829 Undeby, Yorkshire but lived Manchester area, (husband of Mary Ann HILL, above), who I have just discovered. Any help greatly appreciated. 3. Hi Jean, I can't shed any light on John's parentage except to suggest that DNA might be a route to go if you can find the right relations for it. Those relations, of course, might have their own family stories to add which might help. I started looking at Katie Augusta HUGHES but would like some clarification. I gather John is your father's name. I do not understand the sentence "It is alleged that John was a business man and wanted to marry Katie ..." - marry his mother? - I don't understand or have I misread it? Is the tree on Ancestry yours? If so you know that Katie was born in Wales. FreeBMD has her born 1875. Have you got her birth certificate? I have looked at Katie in Wales and have found 2 possibles; Katie the niece of Hugh HUGHES, a farmer in 1891 and Kate the daughter of John HUGHES a cabinet maker in 1881. But I don't know whether you have researched this already. HUGHES is a common Welsh name and there may be others if I were to look more thoroughly. There is another tree on Ancestry which says Kate Augusta HUGHES married a HUGHES and a lot of Catherine HUGHES with a father Hugh so I may be chasing the wrong Katie. When is it alleged that Katie was made a ward of state - is this supported by evidence and if so what, or is it a family story? Was it as a child or as an adult? That info and birth and census records would help focus the mind in the right direction. Having said that I do not know anything about "ward of state" except what I find when I Google it. She does not appear to have been an orphan in 1881 and was living with an uncle in 1891 if I have the correct census. Could it be that she wanted to marry without parental permission? Could she have suffered from post-natal depression, not well understood at the time? I am happy to look further but I don't want to repeat what you have already found and feel I may be doing that. Regards, Christine -----Original Message----- From: Jean Hughes Sent: Sunday, May 29, 2011 4:25 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [ENG-MAN] Mitchell - Hughes Hi, My name is Jean and my birth surname is Hughes. My father was born 11.12.1911 with Mitchell as his surname, and his address on the birth cert. is 173 Earl St., West Gorton, South Manchester. His father is listed as George Mitchell, but there is rumour he wasn't the father. I had hoped the 1911 census might have revealed something, but I have only done the free searches and found most of the known family at Chorlton, but no John (alleged name) at any address with a known family member at that address. Dad's mother, Katie Augusta Mitchell nee Hughes, alledgedly changed her name back to Hughes sometime after, because all the siblings bar one, became Hughes. That one that stayed Mitchell was because he had already left home. Other sublings I have searched to confirm Chorlton are Ivor, Florence and Gladys. It is alleged that John was a business man and wanted to marry Katie, but apparently George kept turning up and she left for the Isle of Man, and John wouldn't go. So if there is any way I can find out about John, it would be most appreciated. I don't want to do research on the Mitchell line if he is not blood related. Katie & George were married and registered at The Registrar office in Chorlton district in the counties of Manchester and Lancaster. Marriage was 10.5.1893, with their addresses being listed as his: 6 Boundary St., Hulme, father - John Mitchell (deceased), shoemaker, and hers: 22 Tuer St. Chorlton upon Medlock, father Hugh Hughes - publican. Earlier, it is alleged that Katie was made something like a ward of the state. I was wondering if there would be any records available for what that was about. If anyone can help with any information to add to the above, it would be most appreciated. kind regards Jean Hughes NSW. Australia.

    2. Jean Hughes
    3. Hi, My name is Jean and my birth surname is Hughes. 1. [ENG-MAN] SCHOFIELD, GILL, MILLS (MILNE) and JONES
    2. Charles Gunther
    3. Hi All, Doing some research on a family called MILLS or MILNE. Though known in the the late 19th and early 20th century as Arthur Owen VAUGHAN (Owen Rhoscomyl) and claimed he was Welsh, Arthur's real name was Robert Scourfield (Schofield) MILLS or MILNE. He is found in military records but quite late in life. He was born in the Southport area in 1863 and was the son of Robert MILLS or MILNE (killed in an accident in 1863) and Jane Ann SCOURFIELD or SCHOFIELD. Jane's mother was Ann GILL, and had been SCHOFIELD or SCOURFIELD but maiden name would seem to be JONES. Ann would seem to have been from Tremeirchion in Flintshire, North Wales. I am trying to find her on census reports before 1861 - by then she is Ann GILL, widow and 66 years old. She appears in 1871 living with the ETCHELLS. Jane MILLS (MILNE) remarried to a Luke ETCHELL and died in 1869 leaving Luke to take care of three children, Robert and Ada from her first marriage and son Philip. With the family was Ann GILL. Seemingly Ann JONES married Joseph SCHOFIELD (SCOURFIELD) in 1833 and an "Ann SCHOFIELD or JONES" married a John GILL in April 1841, both in Manchester. If anyone has any knowledge of any of the families above I would be happy to hear from them. Best wishes, Charles

    1. [ENG-MAN] Ada MacCormac and Roy Clarke
    2. Mary
    3. Dear Listers, Many thanks to Gilly and Antony who have helped me on this. I have now seen the 1911 censuses via genesunited and find that Roy's father was nor Harry but Charles Edward Clarke and mother Emily. Gilly helped with a probable siting of Ada in 1901and I think the Manchester one is the most likely, not the Barrow one, and Antony suggested a birth also in Manchester in 1882. However, my attempts to find Ada on the 1891 census have come up with no matches under any spellings on genesunited. I would stll welcome any suggestions re Ada's said links with the Co-op Society, suffragette membership and JP or Magistrate at Salford. Best wishes, Mary

    3. The 1911 census suggests she was born in Salford but I couldn't spot a birth there. But if I have the right person 1901 suggests Manchester. An that might be this one Lancashire Birth indexes for the years: 1882 Surname Forename(s) Sub-District Registers At Mother's Maiden Name Reference MCCORMICK Ada Ancoats Manchester ANC/188/32 Good Luck Antony Lambert -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Mary Sent: 23 May 2011 14:21 To: [email protected] Subject: [ENG-MAN] Ada Winterbottom nee MacCormac and Henry(Harry) Clarke Dear Listers, I am new to this list and I'm trying to help a son-in-law research his paternal background. His great grandmother was Ada Winterbottom, nee MacCormac, born c.1884. Birthplace uncertain but believed to be Scotland. She was married to William Edward Winterbottom in 1907 in Salford and had 3 daughters Ada 1909, Lilian 1910 and Doris 1911. She is said to have been the first secretary of the Cooperative Society, a suffragette and the first female magistrate of JP in Salford. His great grandfather was a Henry Clarke a painter and sign writer on the Railway.(officially not doing a Banksie).Harry's wife's name seems to have been forgotten. His son Roy 1908 was a Freemason in the Duke of Lancaster Lodge. He married Doris, the daughter of Ada and William Edward Winterbottom. Can anyone tell me how I may verify any or all of this information?
