    3. Morning Listers, Two bits of information for you today. Firstly, the updates to the OPC database is shown below - http://www.lan-opc.org.uk/indexw.html - and secondly, the Beta version of the Familysearch website has uploaded it's own summary version of the 1911 census. The searches returns very basic information on individuals, no addresses, no occupations or links to other household members but it is a free resource that some listers may still find helpful - https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/show#uri=http://hr-search-api:8080/searchapi/search/collection/1921547 8 June 2011 Baptisms 1639 and 1737 to 1812, Marriages 1737 to 1751 and 1838 to 1914 and Burials 1753 to 1812 from the Church of St Clement, in the District of Chorlton-cum-Hardy, Manchester Banns to 1900 and Burials 1810 to 1812 from the Church of St Mary in the Parish of Lancaster Baptisms 1796 to 1812 from the Church of St Anne in the Parish of Lancaster Baptisms 1813 to 1873, Marriages 1837 to 1872 and Burials 1778 to 1818 from the Parish of Lowick Burials 1769 to 1812 from the Curch of St Luke in the Parish of Lowton Baptisms 1793 and part of 1796 and Burials 1801, 1812 and 1816 to 1817 from the Collegiate Church, in the City of Manchester Banns 1900 from the Parish of Marton Marriages 1787 to 1837 and Burials 1786 to 1812 from the Parish of Melling in Lonsdale Baptisms, Marriages and Burials 1761 to 1766 from the Church of St Leonard, Middleton Marriages 1921 to 1935 from Stamford Rd Wesleyan Methodist in the Parish of Mossley Burials 1859 to 1875 from the Church of St Luke, Skerton in the City of Lancaster Baptisms and 1868 to 1906 from the Church of St Clement, in the District of Urmston, Manchester Regards, Sally

    3. Hi David and All, I have now found the following pubs in Manchester 1) Wheatsheaf , 30 Oak Street currently a pub from Google maps 2) Wheat Sheaf, Tib Street was a pub - now a car park is there 3) Wheatsheaf, Deansgate pub as late as the 1970's all three above mentioned here:- http://pubs-of-manchester.blogspot.com/search/label/ 4) Wheat Sheaf London Road (near Granby Row) mentioned here :-http://manchesterhistory.net/manchester/tours/tour9/area9page32.html Tib Street is close to Oak Street so could it be the same pub moved location? Both are close to Thomas Street and High Street where my Hale ancestors lived although I would expect a publican to live on the premises. The London Road one is the one where I have found a 1849 map. I am not sure which one you were referring to David. Christine

    1. Re: [ENG-MAN] Charles HALE - 1861, -71
    2. Christine Benson
    3. Hi David and All, Thanks David, that confirms what I thought, but I just did wonder if the Ancestry transcriber, who thought WH was 14, knew something I didn't. I hadn't looked at Lancashire BMD but have got those children from the censuses and FreeBMD. That is useful to check against - something else may pop up. There is also another child Matthew Frederick born 1863. The father of these children is Matthew b 1816 Ireland. He died Jul-Sep 1870 and had been a publican so I think Charles had taken over and in 1881 Charles is a clerk to a wine merchant so maybe Publican was not to his taste. In 1851 Matthew was an innkeeper at 2 Collier St., Salford; in 1861 he was a Publican and Innkeeper at 10 James St., Thomas St., Manchester; and in 1871 Charles is a publican at 10, High St., Manchester. What is the difference, if any, between a Publican and an Innkeeper? I have no idea about the Wheat Sheaf Public House. What made you come up with that name? What was the its address and where can I access the 1849 map? I have found a small map on a site about the Bull's Head which mentions it but this is nowhere near Thomas St. or High St. and also the current position of the Wheatsheaf is near to Thomas St. but not near to the old position of the Wheat Sheaf on this map. Is this the map you meant? Do you know where I can get more info? Many thanks for the info., much appreciated, but the nature of this hobby is that more info. means more questions! Christine -----Original Message----- From: David Wightmore Sent: Monday, June 06, 2011 6:18 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [ENG-MAN] Charles HALE - 1861, -71 Hi Christine, Looking at the 1861 census page, Charles is listed as age 7, and William Henry as age 4. Lancashire BMD has the following HALE children listed; Fanny (1849), Annie Marsha (1850), Charles (1854) and William Henry (1857) listed as being born in Salford Greengate, and there is an Elizabeth (1861) born in Regent Road, Salford. As I noted yesterday, in 1871, Charles HALE with his three servants are at 10 High Street and the SINGLETON family is at 4 High Street. Did he by any chance run the "Wheat Sheaf Public House"? If so, there is an 1849 map showing the location of said establishment. hth David

    3. Hi David, Thanks for the reply. I gather you think there is no doubt that they are 2 households and the enumerator must have left out the end of household marker as well as not putting a Head in the 2nd household. 3. Whoops! Writing to the list about a new email address doesn't work. The only way to change a subscribed email address is to unsub using your old email address then resubscribe using your new address (or vice versa). Links to do both can be found on the list's information page at http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/intl/ENG/ENG-MANCHESTER.html Best wishes, Lynne list admin. 1. [ENG-MAN] Charles HALE - 1871 census puzzle
    2. Christine Benson
    3. Hi All, I am looking for descendants of Matthew HALE and have found his family in 1861 living in Manchester. The Ancestry transcription is Matthew Hale 45 Mary Hale 36 Charles Hale 7 William Henry Hale 14 Fanny Hale 12 Annie Martha Hale 11 Elizabeth Hale 1 Piece 2951 Folio 17 Page 30 I am a bit suspicious about the ages of Charles and William Henry but I think WH is 4 not 14 - the image is a bit iffy and FreeBMD has a birth to match Charles aged 7 but for WH there are 2 possible births. So I looked for Charles in later censuses and found a puzzle in 1871. The Ancestry transcription is (if I have the right Charles) Charles Hale 18 James Ellis 23 James Williamson 31 Isabella Shields 26 Jane Singleton 21 Mary Singleton 18 Fanny Singleton 17 William Harry Singleton 10 Piece: 4045; Folio: 133; Page: 2 On looking at the image it looks like 2 households but without the end of household marker between them. Charles is a publican as his father was so that seems likely. The following 3 are servants. Jane SINGLETON is marked as Daughter as are the next 2 and William Henry as a son. So if they are 2 households why no head in the second one and the names are coincidental, 2 Fanny's and a William Henry and a William Harry. Certainly there is no one there old enough to be the parent of a 21 year old. I think they must be 2 separate households. Do others agree? Christine

    3. Here is what I found at familysearch on-line, if indeed this is the right family, Andrew & Sarah's first child was either Hannah or Ann Nora: Hannah Flannigan, birth date 1834, burial date 25 April 1834, burial place St. Martin, Birmingham, Warwick, England. Father's name Andrew Flannigan, Mother's name Sarah Flannigan. But Hannah may have been born in 1832. After the death Andrew and Sarah immigrated to New York in July 1834. Do you know where I can get records from St. Martin's in Birmingham?
