Hello Listers, I should like to thank everyone who responded to my email about Thomas Slater, both on- and off-line. Some of you said to send for a copy of his Marriage certificate. Another relative had already done this, and it arrived today. Thomas's father's occupation is given as : Gentleman. In most records Thomas's birthplace is given as Manchester, but in the 1851 census it is given as: Lisbon, Portugal. Can anyone suggest why his parents might have been in Lisbon in 1826, please? The father's occupation in 1851 was, again, Gentleman. Thank you, Margaret Buchanan
Margaret - On Google Books there is a group letter from some British merchants in Lisbon dated 1831 and one of the signees is Thomas Slater. There is also a Joseph Slater Platt. It is in 'British and foreign state papers.' A previous note says they were cotton and woollen merchants. Liane
Thanks for this site Joe. My grandmother lived at the corner of Beech and Neale Roads, so I was very interested in this area. I don't really remember it well as I was only about 7 when I was there so it has refreshed my memories. Hi Margaret, On the site www.freebmd.org.uk the marriage of Thomas and Adelaide was registered in St George's Southwark,Surrey in the June quarter of 1854. Purchasing this cert will provide you with the names of their respective fathers. In case you have net seen the church at Coseley here is a link with photographs http://www.sedgleylocalhistory.org.uk/cos/chch.asp Have you "found" Thomas on any census returns? Hi list members, I have just rejoined after changing my email address. My main interest at the moment is for a John James Walton, who is the father of Francisco Walton born 1882 Chorlton, Manachester. I have the birth certificate for Francisco that also shows his mother as Mary Yeomans (Yeoman). On the marriage certificate in 1902 it shows his father as deceased. I purchased a death certificate for a JOHN JAMES WALTON died 1889 at Ardwick Chorlton, just on the chance that he may be the one, but gives no information on any other family members, the certificate tells me he died near the Gorton Brook Hotel Clower St Gorton, and the certificate was received from the coroner for a inquest held at Lancashire Oct 7th 1889. Regards Barry Wilson Aust

The next monthly meeting is on July 6th at 7.30pm Bolton Cricket Club, Green Lane /Bishops Road junction, Farnworth. BL3 2JB. This months speaker is the local historian Graham Stirrup and his talk is entitled Victorian Times. He will look at Britain's role and influence in the world in the Victorian era and explore events both at home and abroad, and their affect on the everyday lives of ordinary folk. This will give some insight into what it was like living in the reign of Queen Victoria. Everybody welcome and, as always, there will also be a Help Desk for private researchers. Any enquiries to Mrs Barbara Owen, Secretary on 01204309515
Greeings, I live in California, U.S. Much of my family (including me) was born in or very near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, going back generations. However, my great grandmother on my mother's side, Charlotte Ivison Mitton, came to Philadelphia on 6 Dec 1887 on the SS Lord Gough at age 14 yrs. Her mother, Sarah Ann, was with her. I'm not sure whether her father, James Mitton, accompanied them. If so, his surname was spelled incorrectly. ( On 19 July 1887, there was a passenger on a ship arriving in Philadelphia named James Milton or Mitton.) Tragically, James died 16 Dec 1887. -James Mitton was born 1842/43 in Casleton, Lancashire according to the 1881 census & was a mechanic or fitter. -Sarah Ann (nee Ivison) was born about a year later in Manchester. I believe her father's name is John Ivison. Their children in the 1881 census: -Mary Jane b, ca. 1864 -George Alfred b. 20 Sept 1865 Baptism 23 Sep 1866 St Thomas Church, Ardwick -Elizabeth C. b. ca. 18669 -Charlotte Ivison b. 29 May 1873 Baptism 7 Aug 1873 St James Church, Collyhurst I believe they had other children who died very young. Does anyone know this family? Jo-Ann
Since posting on the list a little while ago I've received much support and information from Anne about the Clarkes and Liane about the MacCormacs. Now another bit of advice is needed and hopefully someone will tell me how best to proceed. To verify some of the information it would be useful to have Ada's birth certificate. Census records suggest a birth in 1884 in either Manchester or Salford but the Freeb/m/d show a birth in Dec Qt 1882 in Manchester and another in 1886 in Salford.I think the earlier one is most likely. Obviously to cut down on expense it would be helpful to know if one was ordering the right one. What is best? To apply to Manchester specifying the father must be Joseph or can this be done through the GRO ? Once the mother can be established it should confirm that the info. so far is correct or otherwise. Thank you all for your help and patience. Best wishes, Mary
Cyndi's List brings a reminder of an oldie but goodie: >URL : http://www.mancuniensis.info/index.htm >TITLE : Introduction to Historical and Genealogical Information for the Manchester Region >DESCRIPTION : Historical and Genealogical Information for the Region Anciently Known as the Salford Hundred now known as Greater Manchester. > Elaine and Roger Hart's site includes a Barton Wesleyan Chapel burial register for the period 1804 - 1902 which "will be gradually accessible and fully searchable using the site search engine."
